Doug Coriell Obituary

PEKIN - Douglas Coriell, 70, of Pekin, Ill., passed away at 3:44 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Kindred Hospital in Peoria, Ill.

Doug was born Dec. 19, 1943, in Pekin, Ill., to Harold and Marie (Luft) Coriell. He married his childhood sweetheart, Jeanne Timke, on Sept. 18, 1965.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne of Pekin; three sisters, Nancy Ostlund of Melbourne, Fla., and Diane Coriell and Dorothy (Jay) Green, both of Green Valley; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Coriell of Green Valley and Jan Thomas of Pekin; one brother-in-law, Allan Timke of Chatham, Ill.; six nephews, Steve Coriell of New York, N.Y., Luke Coriell, Wylie (Shelly) Coriell, Jake (Stacy) Green and Noah Green, all of Green Valley, Ill., and Josh (Cara) Green of Washington; three nieces, Cyndi (Kent) Ray of Kemah, Texas, and Linda (Vicki Lucas) Foster and Jeanne Foster, both of Pekin; and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding Doug in death were his parents; brother, Leon Coriell; and brother-in-law, Mel Ostlund.

Doug graduated from Green Valley High School in 1961 and earned a bachelor of science degree from Bradley University in 1965.

Doug taught high school biology and physical education, as well as coached, at San Jose High School for 20 years. One of the memorable moments of his coaching career was the 1969 Red Devils' success that went 28-1. The small school basketball team was defeated by Spalding in the Peoria Sectional. Upon his father's death, Doug farmed the family farm in Green Valley for 25 years.

Doug enjoyed hunting with his Green Valley friends, playing golf every day with the Tremont group, hunting coyotes when the fields were covered with snow with a longtime group of hunters and his morning coffee first with friends in Pekin and then in Green Valley with friends there.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory, 2131 Velde Drive, Pekin. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery.

I just heard about Coach Coriell's passing from my good friend Joe Ingersoll last night. No one shapes young teenage lives more than a coach and teacher! I have good memories of Coach Coriell and San Jose High School. Rest in Peace Coach.

I will miss Doug a lot. I knew him from the singles' group and dances. He was a great guy. Just a very nice gentleman.
