Larry Byerly Obituary

PEORIA - Larry B. Byerly, 74, a lifelong Peorian, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011, from complications following a fall outside his condo in Maui, Hawaii.

Born Sept. 28, 1936, in Peoria, a son of R. Millard and E. Juanita "Nita" Crosby Byerly, Larry married Merry Enz on Dec. 6, 1964, in Buckley, Ill. She survives.

Also surviving are three nephews, Brian (Gayle) Siems and their children, Taylor and Natalie of Peoria, Aaron (Leslie) Siems and their children, Madelyn and Gavin of Greenwood, Ind., Bruce (Lynn) Byerly and their children, Amelia, Clair and Robert Nicholas of Naples, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Madelyn Enz of Onarga, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Myra Siems of Onarga, Ill., and Sharon Byerly of Peoria; and his beloved pets, Paco and Tuxey.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert K. "Bob" Byerly and Millard D. "Terry" Byerly; one nephew, Brandon K. Byerly; one brother-in-law, Ronald Siems; and his father-in-law, Russell Enz.

Larry graduated from Peoria High School in 1954 and earned his bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University School of Business.

He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Larry grew up in the family owned aviation business, which his father, R. Millard Byerly, started on the old grass Mount Hawley airport over seven decades ago.

In 1953, Larry took his first flying lesson in an Aeronca Champ. He accumulated well over 10,000 hours of flight time in various aircraft types. Larry held an airline transport pilot rating.

Larry was a former president and co-owner of Byerly Aviation Inc., and his employees and customers were of the utmost importance to him. He was a generous man, giving freely of his time, had a sense of humor, always smiled and loved to tell a good joke. Larry always considered his employees family. Hundreds of young men and women started their aviation careers at Byerly Aviation.

He was one of the founders, past president and former board member of the Illinois Aviation Trades Association. Larry also was on the aviation advisory board at Southern Illinois University.

In 2003, Larry was inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame.

Larry loved driving and traveling with Merry, Paco and Tuxey in their motor home. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in Edgewater, Wis., Traverse City, Mich., and other places of interest to them across the United States.

He was a Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls fan.

Larry was an organ donor.

For the past 22 years, Larry and Merry spent their winter months on the beautiful island of Maui. Larry always said Maui was his heaven on earth. Larry loved his wife, nephews and their families, life, aviation, Mooney and Aero Commanders, employees, friendships, cheeseburgers and pizza. He was a respected member of the aviation community around the world.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Trinty Lutheran Church in Peoria. The Rev. Mark J. Nelson will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria. Private burial services will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

The family has requested no flowers.

Memorials may be made to Pets for Seniors, Box 64, Edwards, IL 61528 or to a scholarship that will be established in Larry's name at Southern Illinois University College of Aviation.

Larry, finally made it to Peoria and your final resting place. Merry and Tuxey look great and your grave marker is beautiful. It portrays the life you lived and the people, pets and things that were such a part of your well lived life. I can't believe you have been gone more than 13 years now. It seems like yesterday you and Merry were visiting us in Maui, eating, laughing, and having such a great time. Jerry and I will cherish those memories and we'll never forget you my friend. We will see you on the other side.

Remembering one of the best employers I have had the pleasure to work for/with. Remember his using the term "wiggle room" when talking about sales. Always had a smile for everyone and made working for Byerly Aviation such a joy.

Our condolences to the family, knew Larry well for about 25 years. He basically introduced me to Commanders, he came to El Paso and helped me sell two new Commanders to two competing Nissian dealers. Have to say I have been in the aircraft sales bussiness 49 years but this sale and Larry's firneship is still the highlight of my career, Bob Larsen, El Paso Aircraft and Lock Haven Aircraft.

I retired eight years ago as an American Airlines 767 Captain. I still remember a cold winter night from forty three years ago when Larry put a seventeen year old line boy in the left seat of a snub nosed Aztec, and let me fly it back from STL to PIA. I'll be forever grateful to Larry for helping me fulfill my dream of becoming a pilot.

Merry - it is (Tom) Tommy Waldon here and I am so so saddend to have found out that Larry has passed away so suddenly. I am out in California right now for a while for business and Mike McCabe had alerted me to Larry's passing.

I wanted you to know that I am thinking and praying for both you and Larry and hope it is somewhat comforting that you and Larry were always in my thoughts and miss you very much to this day. It has been such a long time since I have seen or talked with you or Larry and I would often think about how things were going for you on the road!!

You, Larry, Bobby, Paul, Dean and the rest of the gang in Peoria and Pekin were and always will be my second family and I owe you guys so much for not only helping my love of flying and aviation to be fully realized, but your unselfish kindness and generosity with all our furry kids will never ever be forgotten!! I only hope that "Airport" the wonder dog and Commander the wonder dog after we lost "Airport" and Mr. Bandit boy who I so loved taking care of for you guys when you went on vacation can team up with Larry and Bobby to keep that wonderful spirit of Fun, Family, Flying, and Pets going strong for all of us!!

It sounds like Paco is still doing great and I remember him like it was yesterday! Would love to meet Tuxey someday!! I live in Metamora now with my wife Tamara and we have been married for almost 18 years now!! No kids but we do have plenty of fur kids as I have always had. We unfortunately lost our sheltie Stormy two years ago this past Thanksgiving but have a great Springer Spaniel named Orbit he is 8 now, and 5 kitties Mew, Emma, Crusoe, Simon, and recently Oscar who decided he was adopting us last fall. Good thing we have 5 great acres for them to roam off their energy!!

Merry both you and Larry bring back such great memories and smiles that I wanted you to know you will always be in my thoughts and prayers and would love to stay in touch. I will never forget you guys ever....

Love,
Tommy

Merry- We want to express our deepest sympathies to you and the Byerly family with the passing of Larry. There are no words that can really describe the fine and good man Larry was. We can never nor will we ever forget what you and Larry did for our Mom (Alice) taking her into the Byerly Family. It was some of the best years of her life. We always knew what was happening with ya'll thru her. Larry will no longer need a Aero Commander because he has been given a new set of wings to fly with. God Bless you and your family.

To the Byerly, Enz, and Siems families,

Though I really only knew Larry and Merry through my best friend, Mr. Brian Siems, I consider their families, a big part of my personal family. I always enjoyed going to visit Larry and Merry at their Peoria home. They are some of the most respected and well loved folks one can only hope to meet on earth. Being around them is gives me a safe warm welcoming feeling that words simply can't describe.

When Brian called me about the news of his beloved uncle's passing, I had to take several long moments to reflect . The sorrow this young man is feeling has to be overwhelming him, I can only imagine. This moment is difficult for me as well because I truly know that Brian is my brother.

Please accept my deepest sympathies during this most difficult time. I am only a phone call and short driving distance away but I will always do what I can to help these families.

With my most sincere heart felt wishes,

Respectfully,

Tommy Moran

Merry –- We can only imagine how painful the loss must be. Larry was one of a kind. His cheerful countenance, limitless sense of humor and caring ways were truly a pleasure to experience. He was a true gentleman. We still have fond memories of our visit with you and Larry on Maui. It was obvious how special the place was to you both. You and Larry are very much in our prayers.

Merry,
This is Ele Ele, Larry's dog on Maui. I loved the way Larry would say, "There she is!" whenever i ran into the room. I would jump up on him and lick his face all over and he'd laugh real hard (the way only Larry could) and scratch my head between my ears and rub my belly. At dinner time, he'd sneak me a piece of whatever he was eating and my other people would pretend they didn't see him do it. I'm sure going to miss Larry

Dear Merry,
Larry was a role model and counselor to me. Being a lineboy for Byerly Aviation in 1967 was the best thing that could have happened in my early aviation career. Ozark,TWA,and now American Airlines 767 Captain. All because Larry Byerly took the time to help a kid from Peoria realize a dream. My thoughts are with you. Paul Booe
