Miguel Alwan Obituary
PEORIA - Miguel F. Alwan of Peoria, IL, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born on June 19, 1928, to parents, Farid F. and Mantura (Bachara) Aluen in Aitou, Lebanon.
Miguel married Sandra A. (Hastings) Alwan on June 30, 1970, in Peoria. They shared fifty years of marriage as of June this year.
Miguel was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; son, Mark Alwan; daughters, Debra (Mike) Alwan-Humkey and Renée (Nicholas) Peters; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Miguel came to the U.S. in the 1940s and graduated from the American Beauty School of Chicago in 1948, where he learned from the owner, Mr. Friedman. He was also taught by top educators from all over the world. He worked for Bergner's for two years, then opened his first hair salon in Peoria, with a second soon following. He won numerous competitions and continued to study under top designers, such as Vidal Sassoon and Paul Mitchell. Miguel continued to work until 2016. He was very devoted to the Peoria Cosmetology Association, and established the Peoria Cosmetologist Haute Coiffure Community to advance cosmetology and hair design. He also created the first Style Show for the Heart of Illinois Association in Peoria. Beyond hair design, Miguel was a member of and valued contributor for the Itoo Society. He also was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus participant.
Private family services will be held. Interment will take place at Springdale Cemetery.
