Although Shawn and I hadn't spoken since high school, he ran through my mind yesterday. I decided to look him up and try to reach out to him, and it led me here. He has crossed my mind from time to time over the years, but I never knew how to reach him, or if he'd even remember me. I wish so much time hadn't passed because Shawn meant a lot to me, whether he knew it or not. To say I am heartbroken is a vast understatement, especially since I had no idea of his devastating loss until now.
Shawn and I had class together in high school, along with a mutual friend who introduced us. He and I became friends immediately: Two shy, quiet kids finding commonalities in one another leading to a close friendship. But as the story goes with many high school relationships, the people involved grow up, sometimes apart, and lose touch. Shawn and I's relationship is no different.
Since Shawn and I didn't get to spend adulthood together, I can only cherish the memories of our youth, our teenage years, however brief they were. We would spend as much time together as possible during school and occasionally after; so much so, people would often tease us by asking if we were "dating". All I know is, all the time we spent together was filled with lots of laughter, dumb jokes, and deep conversation (all of which can be quite hard to come by in high school, albeit meaningful). (He even trusted me enough to give him a ride home right after I got my license, even though he lived right down the street from the school.) That's how I will remember Shawn, all the feelings associated, and what he meant to me.
I can only say to those affected by the loss of Shawn: I am so deeply sorry, and I can only hope that you may find comfort in knowing that he will always be with you in your heart and memories.
I know that's what I'm doing.
