Stephen Fisher Obituary

METAMORA - Stephen Lee Fisher, 34, of Springfield, formerly of Metamora, passed away and went to Heaven on Thursday, April 10, 2014.

He was born to Jerry and Jill Fisher on June 12, 1979, in Peoria, Ill.

He graduated from Metamora High School in 1997, where he was the starting nose guard for the state runner-up championship football team. He also attended Lake Forest College, graduating cum laude with a BA in political science. A lifelong learner, Steve was currently completing his final MBA course at University of Illinois at Springfield, majoring in human resources.

Steve was a senior negotiator at Blue Cross Blue Shield for nine years in Springfield, where he lived since 2005.

With his love for animals, Steve was an active volunteer at Sangamon County Animal Control for two years, donating his time every Monday. He was also involved for 10 years with New Midwest Wrestling. His fans knew him in the ring as Toga Steve.

Steve enjoyed golf, Texas hold'em, slow-pitch softball, mountain biking and trivia nights. He was a referee for JV high school football and always rooted for the Michigan Wolverines. He traveled to China and conquered the Great Wall. No matter who you ask, they would say Steve was a nice guy who always wanted to help others.

Steve is survived by his parents, Jerry and Jill Fisher of Metamora; his sisters, Amy (Kyle Youngberg) and Chrissy (Brad Grebner); and his grandmother, Gwen Elbert. He was an amazing uncle to Bradan, Sarie, Katelyn and Luke. He also leaves behind many friends who he loved very much.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Metamora, with Father Ron Dodd officiating. Recitation of the rosary will be at 4:30 p.m., with visitation to follow from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Mason Funeral Home Metamora Chapel. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Metamora.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations in honor of Steve to Friends of Sangamon County Animal Control, P.O. Box 9742, Springfield, IL 62791.

Steve was always so good with the animals of Sangamon County Animal Control. Faithfully every Monday he would would take dogs out for walks and spend time socializing cats and kittens. He would take scared or shy cats/kittens into a visitation room and spend time with them one on one.The animals loved spending time with Steve as much as he loved spending time with them. Steve will be greatly missed by all.

Steve was constant in the Animal Control kennel hallway taking out very excited dogs who seemed to know that they were in for a treat. At the end of the day I would often find him spending the last bit of the afternoon on the feline side acting as a jungle gym for lots of happy cats who soaked up his attention.
He will be greatly missed by us all both human and furry alike.
