PEORIA - William A. Sommer, 80, of Peoria, Ill., passed away at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born June 15, 1929, in Peoria to Alvin and Lina Stuber Sommer. He married Claudia Almand on June 19, 1954, in Kenbridge, Va., and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Scott (Kristin) Sommer of Phoenixville, Pa., and David (Kris) Sommer of Elgin, Ill.; one daughter, Sarah (Louis) Lundell of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; five grandchildren, Meghanne, Logan, Katie, Amy and Grant; three stepgrandchildren, Alison, Julie and Valerie; one brother, Jay Sommer of Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Miriam (David) Vinton of Morton, Ill.
Mr. Sommer worked for Keystone Steel and Wire Co. and was president and owner of Aerco Engineering Co. in Peoria. He also worked for the State of Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services.
William served with the Transportation Corps of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Thule, Greenland.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Peoria and was a charter member of the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast. He also was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and was an elected Republican precinct committeeman for many years.
His funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, 116 NE Perry Ave. in Peoria. Dr. Robert Phillips will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, also at the church. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
