Daniel Paolini Obituary

Daniel Lewis Paolini, 76, of Bangor, passed away in his home on Monday, March 10, surrounded by family and loved ones following a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of the former Ethel (Shickman).

Born on March 11, 1931, in Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Gilda R. (Rossi) Paolini.

He and his wife were co-owners and operators of Danet's Country Inn, Johnsonville.

His life was rich with many interests and passions, both professionally and personally. He realized his dream of attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., and upon graduation in 1953, he served his country at sea as he traveled around the world. Graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, he was employed by Babcock and Wilcox in Chicago, General Electric and then by RCA in the company's aerospace program.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He owned and operated King Solomon Shooter Supplies in Riverside, N.J. Upon his retirement, he followed in his grandparents' footsteps and entered the hospitality business, tirelessly working for 28 years with his wife Ethel, providing "Tavern Fare with Gourmet Care" to their patrons.

He was dedicated to serving his community, particularly those in need, which is evident by the many organizations where he selflessly donated his time and efforts. His family was his greatest love. He leaves behind a legacy of service above self, honesty, integrity and a great sense of humor.

He was a former officer and member of the Rotary Club of the Stroudsburgs, former officer and member of the PA Licensed Beverage Association, former officer and member of the Crime Stoppers of Monroe County, former vice president and "Business Person of the Year" of the Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce, current president of the Pocono Musician Union Local No. 577, member of the Slate Belt Veterans Association, former officer and member of the PA Tavern Association, past president and member of the Northampton County Tavern Association, a member of the Bristol Elks Lodge, and co-founder of the Delran Junior Marksman Association.

In addition to, Ethel, his wife of 37 years, he is survived by a daughter, Marcy Ruth Harmon, of Forks Township; four sons, Daniel John Paolini and his wife, Patricia, of East Hampton, N.J., Stephen Gregory Paolini and his wife, Faith, of Pottstown, David Wayne Paolini of Bangor and Craig Jeremy Berger and his wife, Trac,y of Bangor; a sister, Amy Frasier, of Syracuse, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren, Noah, Zoe, Kelsey, Marissa, Joseph, Daniel J. III, Daniel L. II and Natasha.

Calling hours will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, in the Reed/Gaffney Funeral Home, 4 Lillian Lane, Bangor. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be private at convenience of the family.

Unfortunately, I only found out last night, April 9th, that Dan died. I used to do Dan's accounting for him back in the '80's and coached his grandson Dan in soccer many long years ago. Dan would always pay for one additional soccer registration fee for some kid who might want to play but couldn't afford it. Dan was a great guy, well liked and very kind hearted. I used to get a tremendous kick out of his always wearing Bermuda shorts and knee high socks, even in the snow in Jaunary. He will be missed.

I've had many years of Dan's friendship and wit, but would like to have had more. He was a true original and will be sorely missed. Deepest sympathies to the family from me and mine

It's hard to believe it has been 19 years since I first met Dan. I will remember his shorts and black socks. His laugh and quick witted jokes. Him digging in his wallet to buy me a beer even though he owned the joint. His unique approach to interior decorating. And most of all, the way he made me feel like family. Love ya Dan! God has a good one on the roster. Ethel & family, god bless and we'll see you soon. Frank and Gina Tirino

To Steve and Faith,

Glenn and I would like to express our deepest sympathies to you and your family. Daniel lived a celebrated life which makes times like this so much more difficult. We pray comfort and peace in knowing that our times are in God's hands and there is no safer place to be.

We were so sorry to hear about Dan. He was a dear, kind man who never stopped caring about the people he loved, regardless of his own troubles. He faced his illness with courage and honesty. We will be forever grateful for his caring attention to our Mom, Elsie Paolini. He was very much loved by us all.

With our deepest sympathies to Ethel, Sis, and all his family,
