George L. Fischer, 81, of Effort died Saturday at home. He was the husband of the late Patricia M. (Hurley) Fischer, who died in 1999.
George was born in New York City, N.Y., on April 28, 1923, the son of the late George W. and Charlotte (Haiser) Fischer.
He had worked as supervisor for Pilot Metal in Wayne, N.Y., for 12 years, retiring in 1985. Prior to that he had owned and operated the Bridge View Inn in Delaware Water Gap.
He worked as a welder for Speery Gyroscope in Long Island, N.Y., for 12 years and also worked for the New York Times newspaper for 12 years.
He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived there 23 years. A comment he used to say was, "If you never lived in Brooklyn, you never lived."
He was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
George was a member of American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert and a past member of Mountain Manor Golf Club in Marshalls Creek. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert.
He is survived by four loving children, Victoria A. Watkins and her husband Tim L. of Sarasota, Fla., Stephen G. Fischer and his companion Nancy Fischer of Effort, Theresa M. Fischer of Mount Pocono, and George S. Fischer and his wife Jennifer of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Victor Fischer OSE of Brooklyn, N.Y., and William Fischer of Reading; one sister, Catherine Fischer of Lady Lake, Fla.; four grandchildren, Marianne Reyna, Charlene Lamb, Stephanie Fischer and George S. Fisher Jr.; two step-grandchildren, Melissa and Venessa Klenke; three great-grandchildren, Robert F. Reyna, Katarina Reyna and Lauren Lamb. He is also survived by a companion, Helen Rehm of Stroudsburg.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Gilbert, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. William J. McCawley celebrant.
Interment will be in Buena Vista Cemetery, Brodheadsville.
Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice of Monroe County, 502 Independence Road, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
