James R. Hayes, 57, of East Stroudsburg, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 22, at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, after being stricken earlier in the day.
Born on April 16, 1947, in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late James Matthew and Dorothy (Hentcke) Hayes. He lived in Monroe County for the past 14 years, moving from Flushing, Queens, N.Y.
Prior to retirement, he was employed as a police officer with the New York Police Department.
James served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg; New York Police Department Honor Legion; and was president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Monroe County. He was also an avid golfer.
Surviving are one son, Keith Hayes of Hoboken, N.J.; one daughter, Laura Hayes of Sarasota, Fla.; and one brother, Timothy Hayes of Jersey City, N.J.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, Brodhead Ave. and Ridgeway St., East Stroudsburg. The Rev. Alfred Vito will serve as celebrant. Burial will follow in Stroudsburg Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg.
