I was not a friend of Jay Effross, just an acquaintance, but still, the news of his passing hit me very hard. He was a wonderful teacher, I know this because of my children (he taught all three)...But from the response to his passing, both at his funeral and on these 32 pages of testimony, he was above all a wonderful human being in a multitude of ways. To Mr. and Mrs. Effross, this is a testament to your charactors. To Sarah, from all that I hear, your father has left you his spirit.
My most heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Jay Effross. Keep his spirit alive in all of you.

Like so many others, I have several fond memories of coach Effross. Of course he taught many of us gym, but for the girls soccer team he taught us how to be just as good as the boys. It was a shock to see his name in the paper. He will always be remembered as a man so enthralled by life. A spirit like that doesnt just disappear. My condolences to his family.

Our condolences to the Effross family. Jay was a very special person to everybody. He always had a smile and Stroudsburg was his life. The 13 years that I had the opportunity to spend with Jay at Stroudsburg was very rewarding. Jay is physically gone from this earth, but his spirit and smile will live forever. He was one of the greatest that makes Stroudsburg High School what it is today: A great school and community with dedicated staff and great kids. Rest in peace Jay!!

My condolences to the Effross family.
I first remember Jay from playing basketball and soccer agianst him in grade school(I went to Arlington). I last saw him at our class reunion couple years ago. Jay was definitely someone who qualified as being "good people". And all the words here are a great testament to the postive impact he made on people. He will surely be missed.

Mr. Effross was a very special man; a positive role model, mentor, teacher, confidant, and friend. Prior to meeting him, I recall my older son describing his outstanding personal qualities as a physical education teacher to our family during dinner one night. He described his positive attitude toward all of his students and his endless acts of kindness.
Later, I became acquainted with him through the soccer program as my younger son played for the team.
Last year I had the pleasure of working with Jay in the high school. He demonstrated extreme character to all people he came in contact with; administrators, his colleagues and students.
His compassion for family and moralistic values will always be remembered. One thing was very obvious. Sarah was his whole world. His face lit up whenever they were together. Sarah, your father will be with you always. He loved you more than anything else in this world.

I knew Jay since he was a skinny little basketball wanna-be, and watched him become a starter for the Mounties. I can still see his half-court shot against Palmerton during his senior season. During my visits back east in recent years, I would see Jay at the high school doing some sort of activity with students. You don't find that kind of devotion among too many teachers. I'll miss seeing his ever-present smile. Condolences to Marilyn and family.

We heard the sad news of Mr. Effross' passing while on our family vacation and the Effross family, as well as the Stroudsburg community, did not leave our minds the entire time. Our community has lost a truly inspirational teacher and friend. After having Sarah in class at the Junior High School, I remember asking Mr. Effross what the trick was for raising such an outstanding young woman. I can only hope that our young daughter is as kind-hearted and sincere as Sarah has always been. Please know that your family is in our prayers.

Mr. Effross was one of the best and funniest teachers i ever had. his was the gym class i would always try to get into. He was always so happy and energetic, and he made sure we were too. I grew up a couple of blocks from Jay, spent countless summer mornings and afternoons with him on the baseball diamond or basketball court behind Clearview Elementary. Based upon the content of the other memorials, it's clear that Jay's class, humor and concern for others carried into adulthood, and that a good childhood friend turned into a great man. God Bless Jay and his family.

Before moving up to the high school and meeting Coach Effross, I already knew how highly respected he was as a teacher and coach. My excitement of being able to play the sport that I love under a man so dominant in the soccer community was undescribable. He has made myself and every one of my teammates throughout the years on the Stroudsburg Girl's Soccer Team better players, and better people. He kept the sport fun, and competitive, and took Stroudsburg soccer to a whole new level. He was the one of the most lively and energetic, halarious people I have ever met. To the Effross Family,
My deepest condolences go to each of you and I hope that you will pull through with a smile as Jay would wish you to. I was lucky enough to know Jay for the past 10 - 15 years, as a fellow sports lover, an opposing coach, and a friend. My last memory of time spent with Jay was at the PV/Stroudsburg girls soccer game this spring at PV. I spent the first half of the game talking with Jay. We had laughs, talked soccer and of course talked about Sarah and how she was doing. It was a pleasure knowing Jay, he made you a better person just being around him. I hope we can all remember Jay with a smile, he would have wanted it that way.

To the Effross Family:
Words cannot express the deep sadness the Stroudsburg community feels nor can they give you all a sense of the profound impact Jay had on so many lives. This guestbook is a reflection of only a fraction of the lives Jay affected.
The joy he brought each day to his students, colleagues, and undoubtedly his family, will never be forgotten. The guidance and instruction he gave to so many will forever live on--and so too will our memories of him.
God Bless Effross family; all of our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I met Jay Effross when I was maybe five years old at the Clearview Elementary summer recreational program. He must have still been in his late teens then, but he was the guy that all the boys and girls wanted to hang around with - because he was fun and he cared! Even at an early age, he was in his element, having fun with kids and playing sports and teaching. While I got to know him in a far different capacity when I was a teenager and he was an educator and Head Basketball Coach at SHS, he never lost the ability to mold lives and to have fun (even though that first Championship Season in 1990 was a stressful nailbiter). "Coach" was a class act and his loss is felt deeply by me personal level and it is a great loss to the community.

My Mom called me this week to tell me that Mr. Effross had passed and I am still in shock. From middle school and high school gym teacher for eight years, since he moved to the high school when our class did, I knew he was a good teacher and good man. One of my fondest/funniest memories is in middle school when he would come into the locker room after 5/6th grade gym class, shouting "Don't forget to put on that deodorant boys!" Another good one is our ping pong battles in high school gym class. He one most of the time using his distracting trash talk. The Stroudsburg community has lost a great man.

To The Efross Family:
Jay was a very special person who would avail himself to anyone who needed his assistance!! When I first met him at a "Meet the Candidates" Board of Ed. meeting a few years ago, I told him I was interested in applying for a teaching position at SHS. He gave me his email and said I could use him as a reference, and to contact him if I had any questions. He was extremely kind, thoughtful and helpful.
Although I did not know him beyond that one encounter, he demonstrated tremendous character, compassion and sincerity. Our community, school, his family and friends will mourn the loss of a wonderful man!!
I extend my deepest condolescences and sympathy to all who knew him!

Since meeting and working alongside Irv, the things he taught me, both professionally and personally, will always have a profound impact on me. To have him as a father must have been an amazing experience and judging by the outpouring of the community around Jay, he and Eda raised quite an amazing guy. I am very sorry for the loss of your son, the amazing father, teacher and mentor. I cannot comprehend the pain of a loss like this, stay strong and remember to laugh, the Effross way.

My deepest sympathy to the Effross family and all those that knew him. May we all find comfort in knowing that although he is no longer here with us, he will forever live in our memories. Anyone who has ever met Mr. Effross has their own special memory. Stroudsburg High School has lost a great teacher and coach, and the community has lost an amazing man. When times get tough remember Mr. Effross' sense of humor and the smile that he always had, he is now smiling down on all of us.

To the Effross Family-
It is with great saddness that I offer you my deepest condolences. Death is difficult and brings with it a deep mourning.
May you always remember the happy times and fond memories. If we hold those close to us, then we will always keep our loved one alive. I will rememember his great sense of humor, his immense compassion, his "love of the game", his constant dedication to "The Relay for Life", his high energy, and his ability to make even the weakest individual feel strong.
God bless and know I am thinking of you at this dificult time. I thank you for sharing Mr. Effross with all of us over the years.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Munch (Class of 1996)
