John Sofko Obituary

John Sofko, 73, of Middle Smithfield Township passed away on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the loving husband of Estelle (Rock) Sofko.

Born in Nanty-Glo, Pa., he was the won of Emma (Yanche) Sofko-Borzcik of Vintondale, Pa., and the late Andrew Sofko and stepson of the late Steve Borzcik. He was a retired United States Postal Operations supervisor in Ebensburg. He relocated to Middle Smithfield Township 15 years ago.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the United States Army with the Logistics Command Division in Japan.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1106, Stroudsburg; and the Thomas P. Lambert Post 2540 Veterans of Foreign Wars, East Stroudsburg.

John was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer and even achieved a hole-in-one. He belonged to the TBIPL pool league, winning many trophies. He lived his life for his family and helping others. He was a man of compassion, honor and integrity. With the help of his wife, he taught his children to live by those standards. He loved life to the fullest.

In addition to his loving wife, Estelle, and his mother, Emma, he is survived by three loving daughters, Eileen Barton and husband, Bruce of New Jersey, Mary Lynn Chamberlin and husband, Donald of East Stroudsburg, and Sharon Kasperan and husband, John of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Kelly Ann Barton, Carley J. Chamberlin and John P. Kasperan; his sisters, Helen Kopidlowski of New Jersey, and Elizabeth Verbano and husband, Herman of Virginia; a step-brother, Tony Borzcik and wife, Eleanor of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas G. Litterio Jr., 22, of East Stroudsburg in 2000.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 28, at 9:15 a.m. in St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg, with Father Daniel Toomey as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

There will be a visitation with prayer services on Tuesday evening, July 27, from 6-8 p.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg, and on Wednesday from 8:45 a.m. until time of service at St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church.

My grandfather was the kindess most giving man I've ever known. He always encouraged me to do the best in life and I will try to make him proud. May he rest peacefully in heaven and watch over all of his family and friends as we will be praying that God is constantly watching over him.
