Michael Sinnott Obituary

Michael S. Sinnott, 28, our beloved son, grandson, nephew and friend, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10.

Michael lived his life out of the box. Most people only dream or imagine a life of fearless adventure like Michael's. He was every mother's gray hair. If you were lucky enough to be his friend you had to hold on for a wild ride, but you could not help but love him.

He was born in Abington and moved to Stroudsburg at a young age. He attended Notre Dame Elementary and High School as well as Valley Forge Military Academy. After a brief stint in the French Foreign Legion and traveling extensively all over Europe, he graduated from the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy in New York City. He then studied in London and worked for cruise ships. For the past couple of years he worked for an Ner York City chiropractor. This year he was close to completing a bachelor of science degree from Columbia University in environmental biology with a concentration in sustainable development.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers John MacMinn and Thomas Sinnott, father Thomas Sinnott and uncle John MacMinn.

He his survived by his mom and dad, Sharon and Rick DeFino of Stroudsburg; brothers Tom Sinnott of Boston and Rick DeFino Jr. of Stroudsburg; sisters Mia and Layla DeFino of Stroudsburg; grandparents Jack and Ann Devitt of Bluebell; grandmother Patricia Sinnott of Philadelphia; aunts and uncles Laurie Davis of Stroudsburg, Sharon and Tom MacMinn of Boyertown, Sharon and Rick Gaglione of Philadelphia, John Sinnott of Philadelphia and Dave DeFino of Stroudsburg; and many cousins and his best friend, Nicole Roundtree of Manhattan.

My shining light has gone out.

There will be visitation hours from 3:30 to 5:30 and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Carmen Perry as celebrant. Cremation will take place following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial remembrances be made to the Michael Sinnott Memorial Donation School of General Studies, c/o Columbia University, 403 Lewisohn Hall, MC 4102, 2970 Broadway, New York, NY 10027.

In Honor of our brother, I will be compiling a book of stories from all those who loved him and knew him. Any number of stories, at any length, no matter how vulgar, or inappropriate you think they are (i'm sure I've experienced worse) is acceptable and encouraged.
The stories we have of Michael are how we preserve his... memory and his spirit. Those of you who promised to help out...now is your chance and I would appreciate everyone's contributions. I'd like to have them all by the beginning of the summer.

His journey does not stop at his passing. Spread the word.

Michael was one of the most unique people I have ever met. He was so charismatic, adventurous, and honest. You always felt like you were really alive when in his presence. There was also a sincerity and loyalty that Michael had that made you know that you could rely on him if you were in a pinch or just needed to talk to someone.

To know that I won't see him around anymore just seems incredible. I know I speak for many of us at Columbia when I say that a great tragedy has occurred. Michael will NEVER be forgotten. He has impacted far too many of us for his memory to ever fade. We love you Michael and always will.
