Born on Oct. 23, 1939 in East Stroudsburg; she was a daughter of the late Ernest ("Tootie") and Catherine P. (Gallagher) Counterman and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County.
Shirley first worked for the All American in Stroudsburg for ten years and then as an arts and crafts activities director for Stroud Manor in East Stroudsburg for the past 15 years.
A 1960 graduate of East Stroudsburg High School, she was a member of the Salvation Army Church in East Stroudsburg, where she belonged to the Ladies Sunday School Class, was a Sunbeam Leader for 30 years, was in the Corp. Cadet Bible Class for six years, was in the Women Home League and played drums in the Salvation Army Band.
She is survived by three sisters: Lucy Gueiss and her husband, Bob of East Stroudsburg, Eleanor Counterman with whom she lived in East Stroudsburg and Susan Weidenbaum and her husband, Mark, with whom she previously lived in East Stroudsburg; and two brothers, Ernest "Sonny" Counterman and Bobby Counterman and his companion, Mary Ealey, all of East Stroudsburg. She was loved by her nieces and nephews: Matthew Weidenbaum, John Kerprich, Tommy Counterman, Ernie Counterman, Jimmy Counterman, Ronnie Counterman, Tracie Tauber, Heather Cleveland, Faith Weidenbaum, Bethann Gesumaria and Kathy Counterman; and her great nieces and nephews: Katie Cleveland, Kiana Cleveland, Ryan Thomas, Allen Thomas, Cassidy Miller, Taylor Miller, Candance Counterman, Jimmy Counterman, Crystal Counterman, Amanda Counterman, Sarah Counterman, Hayley Counterman and Christopher Counterman. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Kate Counterman Kerprich and Maryann Counterman; and her grandparents, Tony and Lucy Gallagher.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, from the Salvation Army, East Stroudsburg, with Captain Thomas Babbit officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery, Shoemakers.
There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. Friday, until the time of services at the Salvation Army.
