Marjorie Roe Obituary

MARJORIE ELAINE
HENDERSON
ROE, 88

WINTER HAVEN- Mrs. Marjorie Elaine Henderson Roe died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at her home from heart failure, surrounded by her loving family.
Marjorie was born in Winter Haven, Florida to Frederick Theodore and Claire Stroy Henderson on February 28, 1923. She attended William & Mary College, Florida State College for Women and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with a BS in Accounting. After graduation, she took her boards and became the first woman CPA in the state of North Carolina. She worked briefly in an accounting firm in North Carolina before moving back to Florida, where she went to work with her dad in the family gift fruit business, Henderson Groves. She was active in her hometown, playing the leads in the community theatre, and during this post WWII era, she met and married her husband of 57 years, then a "Full Bird" Colonel, Ret. and Winter Haven native, Willard Etheredge Roe.
Marjorie was a champion of children, raising seven of her own and reaching out to many more through her life's work in her church and community. She was active in children's education programs at First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and promoted musical opportunities for youth. She was instrumental in the founding of the Winter Haven Youth Orchestra, organizing a European trip and concert tour of Romania for the entire orchestra. Along the way, she founded a summer youth music camp concept she called 'String Fling', hosted at her home on Vero Beach for many years. She was a tireless children's advocate in every organization that she supported.
She loved her family and expressed that unconditional love through the gift of her time and treasures. She extended that generosity to employees, caregivers, as well as other civic organizations and benevolences throughout her life. Marjorie was a consummate host and gourmet cook, who alongside her husband, graciously opened up their home to family, friends and organizations for worthy causes, holiday gatherings, milestones and celebrated events in the Winter Haven community. She was a Member Emeritus of the The Garden Club of Winter Haven and a master flower arranger, a Lifetime Award Recipient of Presbyterian Women USA, and a past recipient of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce Bankers Cup Award.
Marjorie is predeceased by her husband Willard and beloved daughter Marjorie, sister Patricia Brewer Azorin and brother Frederick J. Henderson. She is survived by her sister-in-law Eleanor Henderson, daughters Ellen R. Miller (Marjorie), Donna Roe Daniel and Bob Castellino (Julian, Joren), Martha and Joe Burke (Margaret Allison), and sons William and Carol Roe (W. Gee III, April, and Geoffrey), Quentin and Lori Roe (Eric, Adam) and Morgan and Patti Roe (Stephen, Abigail, John Morgan, Julia, and Joshua), as well as many nephews and nieces and her dear friend and caregiver, Melissa Morris.
Visitation will be at Crisp Funeral Home in Winter Haven on Monday, June 27, 2011 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday afternoon, June 28, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Girls Incorporated.

I smiled the entire time that I was reading all of the comments about Mrs Roe. She was simply the best. Always smiling and so accepting of all us kids. Lord she and Mr. Roe were just special people. I envied their children so. God bless all.

Marj was the first Winter Havenite I met before we moved here. Iwill be forever grateful to her for her kindnesses, acceptance of us and guidance she offered on educating our girls. We will always have a special place in our hearts for her. To the family, may God continue to bless you and keep you in His countanance

Marjorie Roe was one of the smartest, curious and “funnest” persons I ever met, the absolute force of one of Winter Haven’s finest families. For my generation (although she always wanted to know about our mischief), she was at the same time an unrelenting supporter and great inspiration. Maybe for that reason, I feel the need to supplement the obituary above. Although the writer(s) may not have the same inclinations, Marj was a “liberal” in the finest sense. Many a Democratic candidate enjoyed her fund-raising activities and, because of her advocacy of children and families, she and Willard were early and generous supporter of the local and national chapters of Planned Parenthood, understanding the crucial role those organizations have played in the lives of disadvantaged women and the health of their children. Marj was one of a kind, a great care-giver in her own right, and always threw a heck of a party. Here's to you, fine lady!

Back in high school when I was out at the Roe house visiting my "girlfriends", I knew where to hang out - in the kitchen with Marge. She always had homemade cookies and snacks and . . . She knew the way to a guy's heart. We will certainly miss her - the end of an era.

Mrs. Roe always had a smile on her face and her joy of life brought smiles to many others. However, even with her many activities, her greatest legacy is the sense of community, joy and love she instilled in her family and those whose lives she touched. Those gifts will continue to live on in others and spread her kindness for many years to come.

There will never be a more precious woman than Mrs. Roe. She will forever be remembered. It was a honor to be a part of her life. I will be forever thankful that she able to be honored as a grandmother in my wedding. She was such an encouragement to me. She never had a harsh word to say about anyone, nor did she ever have anything to complain about. She will never be forgotten.

Marj Roe was a powerhouse with a heart as huge as Texas. My earliest memory of her was when I was about seven years old. She was driving a gang of us home from church junior choir and we were all laughing and having a ball. That's Marj....active as an elder in her church, volunteering, carpooling, having fun, getting things done, leading Girl Scouts, and making a big difference in a lot of lives often quietly behind the scenes. I remember her kindnesses towards me and my family. It was a true gift to know her. Love to all of her family.
