Connie Compton Obituary

WHEELERSBURG~Connie Darlene Kinney Compton, 85, of Wheelersburg, a former Portsmouth resident, passed away at her home on Saturday, April 20, 2024. She was born on March 31, 1939, in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late John Glen and Lena Rivers Alderman Kinney.

Connie retired from Compton's Family Care Home where she provided residential care for veterans. She was a member of the Church of God in New Boston and a 1957 Portsmouth High School graduate. She enjoyed reading, movies and playing the piano for her family.

A young woman trapped in an older woman's body, Connie loved to "get up and go!" She had never needed a doctor and was known to ride roller coasters with her grandchildren (when she wasn't attending their music or sporting events). Not only was she adventurous, but she was also an incredibly positive person and the light of her children's lives.

Her husband of 25 years, William Howard Compton, preceded her in death on November 23, 1989. The couple married in Portsmouth on June 29, 1963.

Connie is survived by two sons, Carl Matthew (Stephanie) Compton of Portsmouth and William Robert (Michele) Compton of Minford; a daughter, Elizabeth Jane (John) Bailey of South Webster; her sister, Linda Sue (Tony) Albrecht of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Sarah Compton, Nathan (Meagan) Compton, Tyler Compton, and Emma and Evan Bailey; four special nieces, Christina Kyle, Carla Vandenoever, Julie Monroe and Marie Albrecht; a great-granddaughter, Violet Marie Compton; and her beloved dog, Winnie.

In addition to her husband and parents, Connie was also preceded in death by a nephew, Harry "Skip" Kyle.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the First Church of God, 3920 Gallia St., New Boston, OH with Pastor Chris Keeton officiating and interment in Friendship Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME, 1422 Lincoln St., Portsmouth, OH on Tuesday from 5 to 8 P.M. and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Connie provided services, understanding, and genuine care for Veterans. It is impossible to exaggerate what she and the home meant to us since my son chose to live there, a stately old mansion with history echoing through its walls, rather than the sterile, impersonal environment that he left. She was wonderful, cheerful, efficient, and excellent. When she retired, my son came home. It's been difficult to match what Connie did for him but we learned a lot from her.
My son, Larry Hale, and my condolences go out to their broken hearts with prayer.
