CONCORD, N.C.-Unforgettable Gloria (Parker) Winzenread died Oct. 9 in home hospice care in Concord, N.C. She was 78. Born in Gallipolis, Gloria contracted polio at the age of 5 in Glen Roy. She learned to walk again. After being valedictorian at Coalton H.S., she spent much of her 20s and all of her 30s in Portsmouth, including working at WNXT before furthering her education at Shawnee State. She and husband Steve moved to Kannapolis, N.C. in 1985. She retired in Concord in 2006 as an accountant/bookkeeper. She volunteered from 2010-14 as president of the Concord Friends of the Library and was named 2011 Friend of the Year by the N.C. Public Library Directors Association. Her enthusiasm and beautiful smile traveled with her over the years to 40 states and to New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Washington, D.C., Santa Fe, N.M., and Hilton Head Island, S.C. Her last big trip was to national parks in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. She thoroughly enjoyed countless musicals, concerts and plays. Gloria is survived by Steve, a former Portsmouth Daily Times sports editor. They were married for 44 years.

I went to school with Gloria at Coalton and graduated with her. A wonderful lady and friend. She did not let her health stop her from trying things and usually succeeded. Sorry to hear of your loss. We had lost touch many years ago. I now live in Florida and am widowed since 2015.

I'm so sorry to hear of Gloria's passing. She was delightful. I enjoyed her friendship as I worked with her reservations at Old Courthouse Theatre.
