WAVERLY-Kenneth Edward Thompson, Sr., departed this life on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at the age of 86. He was the son of William Jennings Bryan Thompson and Ruby Lillian Streitenberger Thompson. He was born on Van Fossan Road near Stockdale and was a high school graduate of Stockdale in 1954. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Irene Weddington Thompson who has been a great loving wife and mother for 69 years. They have four wonderful children; Pamela (Mia), Ed (Brenda), Chuck (Mariya) and Tom (Johna). All four are college educated. Ken and Joyce were further blessed with eight wonderful grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The grand ones; Kirk (Erica), Derek, Wes (Amber), Trent, Luke, Logan, Jonathan and Sarah. The great ones; Boston, Ella, Kendell, Kylie, Coco, Kru, Stella and Clive. Ken had five siblings; Bonnie (Rev. Jim) Magaw, Heck (Nancy) (deceased), Bill, Jr. (Ruth), Bob, Denny (Sharon).
Ken was instrumental in getting funds to build the Vern Riffe Joint Vocation School. He retired after 30 years of serving in the field of education from teaching to superintendent. Lastly, Ken made a conversion in his life on March 16, 2010 and committed himself to the Lord Jesus Christ from that day forward, he was most proud to have been baptized by two of his sons, Chuck and Tom. His final request was that family, friends and everyone reading his obituary to follow the words and advice of John 3:16 and as a result we will all meet in Heaven in the "Sweet By and By."
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at New Covenant Church in Waverly with Pastor Dale Reed and Pastor Doug Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Union Cemetery on Bridge Street. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at New Covenant Church and for one hour prior to the service on Monday. I only had the privilege and opportunity to interact with Kenny once when I came down to Waverly. He was not only personable as all Thompson were but unique in his interactions. He made an impression on me that I won´t forget.
