Amie Huguenard Obituary

AMIE LYNN HUGUENARD Age 37, of Malibu, CA, formerly of Boulder, CO and Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2003 in Katmai Park, Kodiak Island, Alaska. She was born October 23, 1965 in Buffalo, NY, graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1983, graduated with distinction from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1996 with a B.S. in Molecular Cellular Developmental Biology, then received an advanced degree from University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine. She had currently accepted a position as Physician Assistant in Head Trauma Neurosurgery at Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In addition to her medical profession, which she loved, Amie contributed significantly to the research of grizzly bears and Harp seals. Her enthusiasm for the wilderness started at age 5 and led her to hiking, backpacking and survival skills. Her back country experience took her through the Adirondacks, Rocky Mountains, Grand Tetons and Wasatch Mountain Range. She was just shy of her goal to climb all of the "14ers" in the Rockies. Her passion and love for all animals was intrinsic with her spirit and concern for their protection led her to follow her heart and be active towards that goal. She met Timothy Treadwell, the founder of Grizzly People, in Boulder, Colorado, at one of his presentations on grizzly bears concerning his work with the organization & genuine love for the bears and his message persuaded her to follow her dream. Amie once said "Because of obstacles and logistics most people are too afraid to follow their heart, however, people who do are courageous and inspiring". Although not knowing it at the time, she was describing her life and Timothy's. Amie had been working in the wilderness with Timothy for over 3 years spending several weeks each summer contributing to his research of grizzlies and Harp seals. They knew their work came with the risk of consequences and accepted that challenge because they believed and were successful in making a difference in the bears lives by providing protection from poachers and trophy hunters. Their time in Alaska with the bears gave them a deep understanding of how grizzlies live and both said they would not change a thing. The last day Amie and Timothy spoke with Jewell Palovak on the satellite phone both were ecstatic about seeing one of their favorite bears named Downy. They had seen her grow from a cub to a full grown female along with all of her fishing escapades. If they could leave us with a lasting thought it may be: "Respect all living things for there is a purpose for every creature in this world". Survivors include her mother, Marilyn Huguenard of Valparaiso; father, John J. Huguenard of San Juan Island, WA; 2 sisters, Kathleen (James) Stowell of Sugar Hill, GA, Patricia Huguenard of Sugar Hill, GA; 1 brother, Jim Huguenard of Indianapolis; and 2 nephews, Nathan & Christopher Stowell. She was preceded in death by her grandparents. Following cremation, a local memorial service will be Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of memorial service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Grizzly People/SEE, P.O. Box 2872, Malibu, CA 90265. Hello. Signing this again. It was called to my attention via email that the anniversary of her's and Timothy's very sad passing was just a couple of days ago. I'm a little late, but I still wanted to sign and add something here. Rest peacefully forever. You are remembered by your loved ones and by strangers who grew to either respect or care for you or both.

Sad. Very sad. I was able to come across her last diary excerpts online, which were very telling and insightful. She seemed smart, but loyal and trusting and kind to a fault. She is surely in heaven. I hate that she never made it home like she kept mentioning wanting to in writing. Rest in peace, Aime. Never knew you, but I honor your spirit and memory.

I didn't know Amie, but as a sister under God, I'd like her to know we think about her and pray that she is resting in beautiful peace for all eternity.

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and comments. You have helped humanize Amie for her personhood and character and life and have left a little bit of detail that lifts her from just being a piece of public curiosity. Thank you for what it does in the healing of our hearts for her untimely demise. Love you Amie, hope you are well.

Dear Amie's Family:

I knew Amie from Valpo, as my sister

Diana & her were best friends growing up. She moved to Florida

a long time ago and I got to know her even better. We went on a trip

thru Colo. together and we laughed

so much the whole time. I really

admired her when she decided to go

back to school and live her dreams.

She was an inspiration to me. I will remember her always and know

she is in a better place. I consider myself very lucky to have

known her.

To the family..Our deepest sympathy for your family. We worked with Amie here in Aurora, CO for five years. Amie was a true friend and a devoted employee she will be sadly missed. I use to love the stories of her and my husband of things that would happen in the O.R. and they would just laugh and laugh. I especially loved the way she laughed. It was a true honor to call her our friend. Please know that our prayers are with you and that there is a God that can get you through this hard time do not hesitate to call upon him he will answer just believe..

Do you remember when your mom, U. Frank, A. Irma, Dick, Sue, Lisa, Julie and Amy spent our vacation with all of you. It's memories like that that will live through Amie forever. She and Amy played and played. Had such a great time. All of the kids didn't want it to end. Everything wonderful must end, but everything wonderful lives on in us. Love and prayers.
