Bob Vandercar Obituary

BOB VANDERCAR Hebron, Indiana Age 86 years, of Hebron, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2008. He is survived by two sons, Mike (Verna) of Hebron and David (Sandy) of Lowell; four daughters, Janet Moore of Lake Village, Susie (Jerry) Hayden of Hebron, Patty (Jeff) Hoshaw of Granger and Nancy Vandercar of Carmel; grandchildren, Joshua, Luke (Tammy) and David (Whitney) Vandercar, Michele (James) Rockhill, Adam and Joe Vandercar, Darold (Alene) Moore, Matt (Chari) , Jeremy (Kelly), Jamie (Ryan Thompson) and Bob Hayden, Sarah, Cody and Shelby Hoshaw; great-grandchildren, Emma, Evia and Levi Vandercar, Taylor and Casey Moore, Conner, Zachary, Drew and Jacinda Hayden; sister, Gladys West of Beaverville, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Kay Vandercar of Lowell and Mary Cobb of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Jean; brother, Wayne; and son-in-law, Junior Moore. Bob was born in Eagle Creek Township on August 22, 1921 to George and Fern Vandercar. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1939 and joined the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in World War II. Bob was a POW and received two purple hearts along with many other medals when he was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned home and married Helen Jean Bryant on November 10, 1946. They resided in Lake County their entire lives where they raised their six children. Bob was a farmer and owned and operated the Log Cabin Gas Station and Fruit Market for 35 years. Upon his retirement, Bob and Helen enjoyed winters in Florida at Mariner's Cove in Estero, Florida. Bob was a charter member of the Lowell V.F.W. Post #6841 and also the Lowell American Legion Post #101. He was a member of Range Line Conservation Club, Indian Trail Grange and the EX-POW Northwest Indiana Chapter. Bob loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends here and in Florida. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 18, at 11:00 A.M. at Sheets Funeral Home, 604 E. Commercial Ave., Lowell, IN with Pastor Terry Owen officiating. The Burial will follow at the Orchard Grove Cemetery in Lowell, IN. The Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Range Line Presbyterian Church in Hebron, Indiana.

To all the Vandercar family.
I remember well the times that I had to stop by and get my car filled with gas on my way to teach at the old Lowell Grade School. The Vandercars were always gracious to me. I will always remember the Log Cabin.
