Eli Harris Obituary

ELI HARRIS, JR. Gary, Indiana Eli Harris, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus. He was the first son and fifth child born to Eli Harris, Sr. and Alice (Gary) Harris on January 11, 1931 in East Chicago, IN. He was preceded in death by two sons, Brian Keith and Theodore Carlton; his parents, Eli Harris, Sr. and Alice (Gary) Harris; three sisters, Annie Lee Harris, Rachel Lee Thomas, Queen Esther Sanders; one brother, George Harris. Eli was a 1949 graduate of East Chicago Washington High School. He received a A.D. in Law Enforcement from Calumet College. After graduating high school, he served in the United States Marine Corp for a period of three years, serving in combat in the Korean War, and receiving an Honorable Discharge. He was a 20-year Veteran of the East Chicago Police Department and continued his career in law enforcement by working in plant security in both USX and BP Amoco Refinery, retiring in January 1996. He was a member of the East Chicago Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #59. Eli was a faithful member of SS Monica & Luke Roman Catholic Parish, where he served as a greeter and usher. Cherishing fond memories are his survivors: loving and devoted wife, Mildred; son, Gary Todd (Joy) Harris; three grandchildren, Gary Todd, Jr., Cameron Garrison, and Trey Holmes Harris of Fishers, IN; sister, Cora Brandford of East Chicago, IN; sisters-in-law, Joan Harris of East Chicago, IN, Mary Turner, Velma Willis and Delores Turner of Gary, IN, Arnetta (Marvin) Spinks of Pinson, AL; brothers-in-law, Robert (Earletta) Turner of Farmington Hills, MI, Cleo Wesson of Gary, IN; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Visitation Monday, September 10, 2007 from 12:00 Noon until 8:00 p.m. Prayer service 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel, 2959 W. 11th Ave., Gary, IN. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at SS Monica & Luke Roman Catholic Parish, 645 Rhode Island St., Gary, IN with Rev. Father Patrick Gaza officiating. Interment at Evergreen Memorial Park, Hobart, IN. Professional services rendered by: Guy & Allen Funeral Directors, Inc.
