Emma Douglas Obituary

EMMA L. DOUGLAS "Toots" Gary, Indiana Age 78, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake. She was born on August 16, 1927, in Greenville, Mississippi, to the union of the late Howard and Cora Hudson. She graduated from Coleman High School located in Greenville. Emma has been a resident of Gary, Indiana, since 1960. Emma accepted Christ at an early age. Emma touched so many lives. Once you met her she became your friend for life. She always found time to lend you an ear as well as a helping hand. Affectionately known as "Toots" by her daughter, Valarie, Emma was the glue that kept her family together. After several years of illnesses and never complaining, she became tired. God saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. He gently closed those loving eyes and whispered, "Peace Be Mine." She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Douglas, her sister, Norma Lee Crawford, nephews, Wilfred and Larry Crawford, and a very special cousin, Fannie Bridges. She leaves to cherish her memories, her mother, Cora Webb; 6 children, Joann Turner of Memphis, TN, Walter Franklin of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Nathaniel Franklin of West Memphis, AR, Howard Hudson of South Bend, IN, Valarie Hudson of Merrillville, IN, and Eddie Hudson of Gary, IN; 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; nephews and nieces, Sandra (Ronald) Ruley, Willie (Roylene) Crawford, Robert Crawford, and Theodore (Charmaine) Crawford, all of Philadelphia, PA; special & devoted friends, Yvonne Howard, Bernice Oliver, Jean Bailey, Elizabeth Garland, Emma Murphy; and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, from 12 noon to 8 p.m. with family hour at 6 to 8 p.m. at the Guy & Allen Funeral Home, 2959 W. 11th Ave. Her Homegoing Celebration will be held at Miller First Baptist Church, 5601 E. 4th Ave., Gary, on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. DAISY WILLIMS

To Mrs. Emma Douglas's Family:

Althouh I never had the opportunity to meet Ms. Douglas, I am acquainted with her through her son, Nate. He often talked about her with love and affection, so I know she must have been his "Jewel". Words cannot express the sorrow of your loss, but I can say that time will lessen the hurt and pain you all must feel. Mrs. Douglas's "Legacy"(her memories)is something you all can treasure for a lifetime. You all have my "Sympathy and Prayer". "Go With God".

A personal friend of Nathaniel.

To the Family: My deepest sympathy in your time of sorrow. I met Ms. Emma several years ago and found her to be a wonderful person. Always cherish your mother's memories. She spoke with Korey (a granddaughter) and myself recently and had plans for her to attend Korey's graduation. God had other plans. However, she will remain in our hearts forever. With heartfelt sympathy. Lucy Woods

Every time I had the opportunity to visit Emma she was always a gracious hostess. Although my two children did not know Emma, I am sure that they will feel the void of not having her as their grandmother. Our condolences go out to the friends and relations of Emma. Judith Franklin AA

Hi my name is Nadine Franklin and I am one of Ms. Douglas's grandchildren. I am Nate's daughter. I met Ms. Douglas once or twice when I was younger and do not remember much about her. I did not get to see her much because of my mom and Nate's divorce. I just wanted to give my condolences to the family and I am sure if I was able to see her more often I would have seen that she was a good woman. Again I am sorry for your loss.

To the Douglas Family with sincere gratitude for the unselfish help your Mom gave to my family. Emma helped out my dad, Herbert Caldwell, in his time of need and I will be eternally grateful to her for that. She was an angel here on earth. God bless you all.
