Essie Lewis

1932 - 2018

Essie Lewis was born on April 3, 1932 in Augusta, Arkansas. She was a woman of faith, a devoted wife and a loving mother. Her daughters will always be thankful for being reared by a God-fearing, strong and inspirational woman. She stressed education and rejoiced when all of her daughters received their college degree. She was a cornerstone in the neighborhood where she and her husband settled after moving from the south. She added beauty to her block with her green thumb which provided countless flowers for all to enjoy. She was known for her garden which produced bountiful harvests each year which she shared with friends, neighbors, family and anyone in need. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lewis; her parents, Elaxter and Ethel Roddy; sisters Agnes Roddy, Emma Jean Roddy, Nettie Bradley and Erma Lewis; her brothers, JB, Luther, Stanley, CJ, Chester and Elaxter Roddy. She leaves to cherish her memories, her three daughters Patricia (Willie) Winbush, Theresa Lewis, Atty. Tracy (Robert) Coleman; her grandchildren De'Marcus (Shana) Winbush, Denise Winbush and Samuel De'Miracle Coleman; sisters, Emma Lee Wright, Ethel Woods, and Joe Willie Stephens; along with great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation from 9:00 am - 11:00 am with the home going service starting at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Van Buren Missionary Baptist Church, 2585 Van Buren Street, Gary, Indiana. Pastor Dwight E. Mobley, Sr. officiating. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park.
