Dear Margaret,
Dr. Paul was like a father to me while I was at VU. He was my teacher, counselor, and inspiration. I am sure he had no idea how much of a difference he made in my life. I remember fondly being in one of the first Soul Purpose troupes back in 1988. I was a freshman and I was sick in my dorm during the first rehearsal. He came and checked on me! It has been almost two months since his passing and I still think of him often. Thank you for sharing him with us for so many years. Rest in the sweet arms of your Savior JP.

To the family of Dr. John Steven Paul:
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Paul's death. I never was a student of his but served on the Committee on Publications so very long ago. He along with Dr. Renu Juneja were the faculty advisers. I grew to respect him deeply and valued his wisdom.
In 1984, I was one of the recipients of the "Outstanding Student Service Award." For the entertainment, a racially inappropriate song was sung. At that time, folks were less evolved
in that area and frankly I had become inured of such slights. But Dr. Paul was incensed at the insensitivity of it all and apologized to my parents and me on behalf of the university. I've never forgotten that--never.
More than twenty years later, Soul Purpose visited Trinity English Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, IN, where I served as an associate pastor. I saw him and thanked him for standing up that day. He had long forgotten that incident. I suspect that he was the kind of person that spoke out against injustices and inspired thousands of students through the years.
It is a deep loss to the Valparaiso University community and all of the students whose lives he influenced. He certainly influenced mine.

Dear Margaret--
I am deeply saddened to hear about John's death. I am so glad that he was my colleague at Valparaiso for several years, and I feel blessed to have had a conversation with him in the chapel during my visit last October.
John was a great man with a large soul. Every student who mentioned him to me spoke glowingly of his gift as a teacher and his enthusiasm and love of the theater. His death is a huge loss for Valparaiso University, Lutheran higher education, and American theater education.
You are in my thoughts and prayers, Margaret.

To the family of John Paul,
We've never met, but I feel as if a brother has gone.
Like Tom Garrow, who has also written in this guest book, I studied theatre in England with John in 1971-72. For a kid from Minneapolis, the year in Coventry was tremendously expanding. I've never known such change or sense of experiencing something really special. Dr Van Kussrow had a lot to do with that too.
My memory of John was of a major talent even then. He was intelligent, quick witted, imaginative and funny. In our group of eleven students, he was the leader in many ways.
I'm always shocked when life ends too soon. I'm saddened to think of the pain of loss for John's wife, and for all of his friends and family.
John and I were not close in the intervening years, I in NYC, but he has always remained in my heart as a friend and inspiration.

Two weeks later, after the funeral, after all the tributes, after learning how much you and Margaret are loved, your brother in law misses you--the wit, the kindness, the sense of purpose and knowing what you were all about---John, I wanted much more time as your bro in law. Rest in peace till we join you at the Father's table. Thanks for all the love and the laughter. David B

Margaret and family...I cannot tell you how saddened I am to hear of John's passing. I also can’t believe I am writing a "memorial" to one man I thought was invincible! You see, JP was one of my Theatre professors at Valpo back in the early 80s. I was privileged to be cast in several of his shows at Kroencke Theatre, including Hot L Baltimore and Fiddler on the Roof. I think between he and Doc Sitton I learned the most about being the best actor I could be. Although my career didn't lead me to the stage or screen professionally, I gleaned much from my love of acting and writing, applying it into my radio shows, parody and commercial writing. I will always have fond memories of JP, his witty and hilarious comebacks to the teasing he put up with from all of us! We used to say he kept "a book of students" and each of us had our own chapter; mainly because he kept all the little facts about us hidden away, ready to use when we got a little out of hand during a rehearsal or class! What a trip! He will be missed. My regret is that he is not still among us to share his gifts with the rest of the world and future Valpo students. Rest in peace, JP...May the Lord God bless you in repose and give strength to your family and friends as we mourn your passing, and grace us with hope that we will see you again when Jesus returns to claim his faithful as his own in the last of days. God’s peace and healing love to you and your family.

Dr. Paul was my friend and mentor. He had a lot to do with me coming out of my shell at VU and expressing myself. Certainly my success in broadcasting can be attributed to my time at VU, and Dr. Paul was one of the major influences on me while I was there. Thank you, John. Paul Chambers, CNN.

I first met John nearly 40 years ago when we entered Valpo as part of a small group of freshmen speech and drama majors meeting in Dr. Vera T Hahn’s studio. I was fortunate to get to know him through the classes we shared - and even luckier to appear in many productions with him. What I remember most – beyond his contagiously wry sense of humor - was the ease in which he was willing to take risks on stage. How I envied that. John approached every role with energy, enthusiasm, and a wonderful sense of curiosity and adventure which led, inevitably, to a great performance. It was a joy to share the stage with him.
We've seen each other a few times over the years, not nearly enough. But I do know that John’s passion for theatre and unwavering commitment to Valparaiso University turned out to be a perfect union. He believed strongly in the work he was doing, and had a gift for instilling that feeling in those around him. I feel as if a vital piece of my own life is gone but take comfort in knowing that John’s spirit will live on, not only on the Valpo campus, but in the countless lives he has touched.
Dwight and I extend our deepest sympathy to Margaret, and to John’s family.

Dear Margaret, Bob, Betty, Jane, David, Joanne, Wendy, Sara, Kelley, and Emily,
Kayla, Alison and I send our deepest condolences to you. John was such a dear friend to our family. I enjoyed my many conversations with him about theater, teaching, children, and life. He was so meaningful to Alison, introducing her to the magic of Shakespeare and the wonder of theater. His encouragement of Alison's work and talent are very important to her and have sustained her work as an actress and writer. I am so glad that I saw John and Margaret outside John's office a few weeks ago. We will miss him, terribly.

Dear Margaret,Bob, Betty, Jane, David, Joanne, Wendy, Sara, Kelley, and Emily,
"A teacher touches eternity. They never know where their influence stops." (Unknown - a not good citation for a professor of Theatre and the English Language) Certainly John's influence will go on and on - his laugh will be missed but the laughter his wit and insight brought will echo in the lives of those he taught to look at the drama of life and the dramas on the stage with fresh eyes and a keen perspective.
Mary and I are thankful that Jacob had the opportunity to be in Soul Purpose and work closely with JSP. His witness of faith was strong and sure. Know that you are in our hearts and in our prayers at his sudden departure from this life into the presence of his Savior.

Dear Margaret,
How shocking and sad to learn of John's too early departure from this world to dwell with God. I remember him fondly from my affiliation with the Art Museum, and I remember your and John Paul's and Carol's and my going to see a production of "She Loves Me!", a play I had wished for him to stage. Christ's peace be with you.

Dearest Margaret, Bob, Betty, Jane and family- There are no words to say that have not been said by someone already. The impact John had on everyone seems similar, as in HUGE. We were fortunate to have met John and shared a few family functions that allowed us to get to know that John was not any different than the rest of his lovely family. Then we got to know him and Margaret as our son is attending Valpo and the impact you both have had on him is not any different than others. Truely remarkable and we are Blessed as a family to say we know and love the entire Paul Family.

Rest in peace, Dr. Paul. Thank you for some of the best memories during my undergrad years at Valpo (class of '90), including the opportunities on stage. I'm sorry that future VU generations won't share in your positive spirit and guidance. My prayers are with Margaret, your family, and the Valpo community.

John Paul and I met at Kennedy airport in 1971 when he was trying to get 11 of us organized and on the plane to London to begin our Junior Year Abroad at Coventry Cathedral, Coventry, England. Van Kussrow, also of Valpo Theatre roots, was the faculty director of the program. John had a wicked sense of humor, and we all benefitted from that, from his intelligence and from his passion for theatre.
He's gone too soon.

Margaret and John' other family members, my deepest heartfelt prayers are with you. I celebrate John Paul's life in the midst of this sorrowful time. Having graduated in 1989 John and Margaret were wonderful mentors, friends, professors and inspirations during my 4 years at VU. I transitioned into becoming a theatre major and having John Paul there made it a great deal easier. I will always remember, and be grateful for his direction, lessons, kindness, motivations and inspirations. I use them all the time nowadays since I am a H.S. theatre teacher and director in Columbus, Ohio. I will miss him deeply, but his wisdom and humanity will live and guide me forever!

A man of distinction, Dr. John Steven Paul dedicated his life to academia, the theatre, the church and his students. For this I am proud to have had him in my life. In those worlds he was Dr. Paul to me. Outside of those worlds, he was my friend JSP. Someone who I could share a few laughs with over a martini (extra dirty for JSP please) or have a meaningful conversation with about the state of the world. Always happy to provide his insight and guidance, my professor and friend will be sorely missed. "And they danced...."

Professor Paul was one of the kindest, most generous, and most FUN professors I have ever had. I was a student there when he first arrived at Valpo and he immediately welcomed us into his heart and his home. I was blessed to have studied under him.

I had the honor to be a student in the Valparaiso Theatre dept when John Paul first arrived in 1979. His intelligence and passion immediately raised the bar for all of us on the boards of the old Kroencke theatre. We knew he was destined to have a permanent and positive effect for Valparaiso Theatre. His direction helped me fulfill my dreams and I had a wonderful 25 year career at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. I was lucky enough to visit with Professor Paul a few years back during a visit home and witness the amazing changes that he helped create at Valpo and thank him for all he taught me. I am sure he will write and direct amazing celestial productions and I feel a twinge of envy for all of the great theatre that the angels will get to witness. My deepest sympathies to Margaret, his parents and family.

John Paul was one of my professors at Valparaiso University. I always admired his stagecraft and how he always made "pretty stage pictures" as we used to say in directing class. I worked with him closely while we were revamping box office procedures at Kroencke Theatre. He went on to do some remarkable things after I graduated from Valpo. He will always be a part of me as he taught me there was more to theatre than acting and inspired me to take on many roles in theatre including props, management, writing and directing. He is partially responsible for my career today as a NYC playwright/director.
