Russell D. "Newt" Simpkins

SIMPKINS, RUSSELL D. "NEWT" 85 - of Cape May, Simpkins, Russell D. "Newt", 85, member of First Baptist Church of Cape May Court House, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 22, 2009. Born to George and Mary (Dilks) Simpkins, he was a lifelong resident of Cape May Court House. Newt served during World War II with the U.S. Army after which he re-enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He retired after 20 years at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He was also retired from the Cape May County Board of Elections. He was a member of VFW Post 15031, The Middle Township Democratic Club, and Cannon Lodge #104 of Free and Accepted Masons. He was a life member of the Court House Fire Department serving as Commissioner and a firefighter. He enjoyed being with his family, gardening, fishing, backyard bird watching, and having coffee with his friends at donut connection. Newt was also a history buff of his native Cape May Court House. Newt is survived by his wife of 37 years, Betty (Tomlin); children, Debbie (Billy) Adams of Cape May Court House, Joe (Sharon) Trombetta of Cape May Court House, and Mary (Charles) Trombetta-Pessagno of Galloway; grandchildren, Bill Adams III, Jaime Adams, Al Trombetta, and Katie Trombetta; three great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers George and Joel Simpkins. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Av., Cape May Court House, where relatives and friends may call at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Baptist Cemetery, Cape May Court House.
