Birger Schmidt Obituary

Schmidt, Birger E.

Birger E. Schmidt., 92 of Appleton passed away in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loved ones on October 1st 2013. Birger was born in Tilleda, Wisconsin on June 25th 1921 to the late Joseph Schmidt and Erda (Reinhert). Birger proudly served his country as a member of the US army during WWII. Some of the many battles Birger fought and decorations behind his name are the Battle of Normandy and the Silver Battle Star. Birger is survived by his true love, Virginia (Brahan). They were blessed with 71 years of marriage, beginning on Valentines day, 1942.

After Birger was honorably discharged from the army, he enjoyed a full and rewarding career as a salesman. After 51 years, he retired from Electronic Industries, INC. out of Oshkosh WI. Birger's true passion in life was his family, he had 10 children, and currently 100 grandchildren. Spending time boating and fishing up north at his cabin on Boulder lake were among his favorite past times.

Birger will be sadly missed by his wife of 71 years, Virginia; Their 10 children and spouses: Patricia and Mike Hulke, Appleton; Robert and Judith Schmidt, Appleton; Sandra DeBruin, Appleton; James and Brenda Schmidt, Kaukauna; William Schmidt, Eau Claire; Elizabeth and James Van Bommel, Fond du Lac; Joseph and Bethlehem Schmidt, Lakewood, CO; Paul and Cindy Schmidt, Appleton; Donald and Heather Schmidt, Aurora, CO; Randall and Heidi Schmidt, Appleton; their 41 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; 9 great-great grand children; his sister: Ferril Lindroth, Shawano; his brothers: Randall Schmidt, Shawano; and Daniel Wiedner, Slinger.

He was Preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Archie Schmidt; and his son in-law: Maurie DeBruin.

A celebration of his life will take place at St. Pius X, Appleton. Friends may visit at the church on Monday, October 7th from 9:30am until 11:30am. Mass to follow. Interment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Neenah. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to those that provided love and compassion in preparing Birger for his Journey to Heaven.
