Doris Carlson Obituary

Menasha - Doris Carlson, age 84, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 18, 2018 at Oak Park Place in Menasha after complications from COPD. Doris was born in Appleton on March 26, 1933 to the late Harry C. and Minnie (Kemps) Noffke. As a mother of 9 children, Doris poured her heart and soul into the lives of her kids and their families. They carry forward her compassion, her gift of hospitality, her unconditional love, and her desire to draw closer together over a good meal in a full house. Most of all, they hold onto her contagious smile and infectious laugh, and her genuine care for everyone she met.

Doris worked at Valley Orthopedic Clinic as a receptionist, at Rawhide Boys Ranch as a bookkeeper, and at the Appleton Public Library. Prior to her marriage to Bill Coenen, she worked at Appleton Wire Works. She was active in various church activities, was a wonderful cook, loved to travel, had impeccable penmanship, and was always plotting her next Scrabble victory.

She will be missed by her children: Christine (James) Machamer, Waupaca; Joseph (Jane) Coenen, Kaukauna; Richard (Judith) Coenen, Rockford, IL; Robert (Lori) Coenen, Elcho; John (Angela) Coenen, Dale; Suzanne (Paul) Shoberg, Larsen; James (Margret) Coenen, Appleton; and Katherine (James) Fitzgerald, Cincinnati, OH; 23 grandchildren: Jason (Ariel), Becky, Angie (Alex), Nick (Jamie), Tad (Lynn), Sean (Kirsten), Andrew, Lizie, Amy (Todd), Aaron, Ryan, Chris (Mary), Jessa, Anna, Bekka (Mark), Leah (Charley), Emma, Jacob, Alicia, Lydia, Vivian, Shea, and Patrick; 16 great grandchildren: Van, Daniel, Leah, Micah, Eli, Sarah, Sicily, Stella, Henry, Bryce, Hayden, Braelynn, Ashley, Ellie, Avery, and Rosabelle; 2 sisters: Phyllis (Richard) Edge, Appleton and Sister Suzanne Noffke, Racine; 4 brothers: Larry (Joanne) Noffke, Naples, FL; Tom (Lidia) Noffke, Italy; James (Judy) Noffke, Powell, OH; and Steve (Jean) Noffke, Neenah. She is further survived by son-in-law Don (Holly) Nieland, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Barbara Nieland, Bill Coenen, Ken Carlson, and Jerry May.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, January 26, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with Father Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may visit from 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel, 606 N. Oneida St., Appleton, and directly at the church on Friday from 9 am until 10:45 am. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice and the staff at Oak Park Place for the compassionate care shown to Doris.

My prayers and sympathy to all of you for the loss of Doris. She and my mom, Mary Ann, were first cousins and were very close when they were growing up. I had the privilege of seeing her a few times and will always remember how sweet she was, very much like her mom. Peace and comfort to her family, I know she will be missed. Diane Van Herwynen

To all the Coenen children, your mother's love was a gift beyond measure, offered to my father and returned in kind. I will always remember her most of all for how happy she made him and how she cared for him when he needed it most. May she rest in peace with all her angels about her.

When my mother passed away in 2008, Doris offered, "I'll be your mother now." It was such a breathtakingly beautiful thing to say, but Doris was like that. She was the sweetest, gentlest, most loving person I have ever known. I love you, Mom.

Your Mother was a Great Lady. One of my Moms Glady Minten,Best Friends. We will miss her, I always knew your Mother, but with my Moms legs failing her I really got to know your Mom with different visits we were able to do. She was always upbeat, kind, caring and very proud of her family. I feel very Blessed that I got to know her. I will be out of town for the funeral but will hold your family in my prayers. I am so sad ...but I am thankful of being able to meet her in summer 2016. In her living room I found this poem and wrote it down for my memory:When I think about RainI think about singing. When I think about singing It' s a heavenly time. When I think about heaven I think about angels. When I think about angels I think about You.Thank you Doris for your Big heart. I send greetings to all the wonderful members of her Familie. In love insa
