Fred Christman Obituary
Appleton - Fred William Christman Jr. died peacefully, joining Dorothy in heaven on May 2, 2021 at the age of 99. Fred was born August 5, 1921 in Green Bay to Fred and Ellen (Lang) Christman. He graduated from Green Bay East in 1939 and the University of Notre Dame in 1942. He served his country in World War II as a naval officer. Fred was united in marriage to Dorothy Van Straten on July 1, 1950 at St. Patrick's church in Stephensville. They spent 70 years together before Dorothy's death in November 2020. Fred and his brother John owned and operated General Office Supply Co. in Appleton for many years. Fred was a member of St. Therese Parish and the Knights of Columbus.
Fred is survived by his four children: Peter (Erica) Christman of Eagan, MN, Mary (Gordon) Grado of Scottsdale, AZ, Fred (Maggie) Christman III of Gilbert, AZ, and Ann (Paul) Whalen of Appleton. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Katherine (Zach) Booth, Gordie Grado, Michael Grado, Alexa (Doug) Dedrick, Emily Christman, Sara (Brian) Hoyt, Elizabeth (Colin) Miley, Patrick (Stephanie) Whalen, Chris Whalen, and Max Christman (fiancée Kelly), and six great grandchildren: Jackson, Harrison, Emily, Erin, Connor, and Josephine. He is also survived by his sister, Ellen Spietz, of Green Bay.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brothers and sister-in-law: John (Jean) Christman, Howard Christman and Gerald Christman, and his sisters and brothers-in-law: Mary (Bob) Walters, Betty (Bob) Mohr, Joan (Dick) Van Deuren, and brother-in-law Al Spietz.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the kindness and care provided to Fred at Renaissance Assisted Living, his home for the past 3 years, and at Rennes in his final few days.
The funeral mass for Fred will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton on Saturday May 8th at 11:00am with Fr. Ryan Starks officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00am up until the time of the service. Masks are required. Memorials may be made to the St. Therese Parish Building Project.
