Jack Anderson Obituary

Jack Gustave Anderson, M.D.

Jack Gustave Anderson, age 90, of Appleton passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on July 8, 2014. Jack was born on March 6, 1924 in Shawano, the sixth child of Albert and Henretta (Gribler) Anderson. He graduated from Shawano High School and pursued a pre-medical career on a basketball scholarship to Marquette University. His college education was interrupted when he was called into military service during World War II. Jack was engaged in active duty with the 66th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army for 33 months. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to Marquette University, graduating from medical school in 1951. He was a proud member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. Three days after his graduation he married the love of his life, Janis Stehlik, in Two Rivers. After working as an internist at Minneapolis General Hospital and at Veterans Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, Jack and Jan moved to Appleton in 1955. Jack enjoyed his career as a staff physician at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Appleton Memorial Hospital (Appleton Medical Center) from 1955 to 1986. He was a member of the State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. While in private practice, he served as the president of the Outagamie County Medical Society in 1964, maintaining an active membership from 1955 to 1986. He also served on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Heart Association (1974-1980) and was presented with the Community Service Award from the Wisconsin Heart Association in 1977, as the originator of the Heart Watch Program for Outagamie County. Jack was also a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine. He retired from full time practice in 1986, but continued to pursue opportunities to help others with part time involvements - his greatest joy in medicine was "the feeling of helping another human being." One of his great joys through the years was watching his children grow up and become parents. He spoke of Janis as a" tremendous wife and mother."

Jack found great happiness through his involvement with the Rotary Club of Wisconsin, Riverview Country Club, and First United Methodist Church. Always an avid sports enthusiast, he thoroughly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in their endeavors. Jack was an accomplished athlete in his early years and was a #1 state ranked tennis player as an adult. He was a visionary in the development of the Fox Cities Racquet Club in Appleton. He was thrilled to score a "hole in one" at Winnegamie Golf Course. Jack was very happy and proud to be inducted into the Shawano High School Hall of Fame in 2002.

Jack is survived by his three children, Jack (Kathy) Anderson, Kristin (John Jr.) Mielke, and Sara (Dan) Darmstadter; eight grandchildren, Paul (Alyce) Anderson, Mark, John and Erik Anderson, Sarah and John Mielke, Claire and Ellen Darmstadter. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends that loved him. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Janis, along with sisters (infant) Aurel Anderson, Fern (Rev. E. Wesley) Perry, Lenore (Paul) Grunau, Jane (Dr. Thomas) Perrin, and brother, Olen (Dottie) Anderson and brother-in-law Richard (Audrey) Stehlik.

The funeral service for Jack will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 E. Franklin Street in Appleton. Rev. David Farina will be officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. The entombment with military honors will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Online condolences may be expressed at www.wichmannfargo.com.

As a family, we want to extend a very special "thank you" to Kathy Mischler for her compassionate and loving care for Jack over the past two years, as well as to the wonderful staff at The Heritage and Cherry Meadows, and to Dr. Stephen Dernlan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice in Jack's memory, or to a memorial to be established by the family.

To the entire Anderson family...I am so sorry for your loss. Pops will be greatly missed. Always encouraging and supportive. He no doubt is giving tennis lessons to the faithful up in heaven. Wish I could have been at his funeral.

Peg and I wish we could attend Jack's funeral service, but we are in Chicago for a wedding. Jack and Jan will be in our memories forever. We appreciated Jan's valentine cookies and John enjoyed giving tennis lessons to all the Anderson's. He really enjoyed giving Jack lessons, for Jack would always tell John what he was doing wrong before and during the lesson. By the way, John rarely defeated Jack in tennis.

We remember the fun we had playing mixed doubles at Fox Cities Racquet Club. We also had many wonderful memories participating in the Top Hatters Dance Club with Jan and Jack

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the entire Anderson family.
Sincerely,
John and Peg Kading

Dr. Anderson,
I would like to offer my sincerest sympathy to you & all your family.
Your Dad was a great man & wonderful physician. He will be missed by so many. I was privileged to have him as my Internist since 1960 when his practice was downtown in the Zuelke Bldg. He always had a big smile & was
very concerned for all his patients.
Sincerely.
