John Haselow Obituary

Haselow, John R.

Dr. John R. Haselow, age 86, Neenah, passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, January 27, 2016, surrounded by love with his wife and family by his side.

John was born on June 24, 1929, in Neenah, son of Arthur and Viola Haselow. He graduated from Neenah High School in 1947, earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and completed his Medical Doctor degree at Marquette University, Milwaukee.

He lived a full and very active life and contributed his time, intellect and energy to help many over his lifetime. He honorably served in the U.S. Army. He had a passion for medicine and for athletics, demonstrated by a very large and thriving medical practice of about 50 years, first in Fremont and then in Neenah. John left that practice to start a preventive medicine and cardiac rehabilitation program at the YMCA, which married his passion for medicine and fitness.

Dr. Haselow also practiced what he preached, achieving many athletic goals over the years. He was the Neenah High School quarterback and then served as the football team doctor for 30 years. He swam across Lake Winnebago, from Neenah to High Cliff, twice. John participated in hundreds of running, cross-country skiing and triathlon races. Highlights were completing the Iron Man Race in Hawaii twice, and being selected as a member of the US National Triathlon team, to compete in Australia and New Zealand. He also completed the American Birkebeiner Cross Country Ski Race over 25 times.

John married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Jean Zuleger, on December 29, 1952, and they were blessed with 4 children. He was a wonderful father, providing generously and instilling a sense of adventure in his children. John was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Neenah.

John is survived by his wife, Gloria; 4 children: Johnny Haselow; Susan (Philip) Birner; Nancy (John Nash) Haselow; and Linda (Patrick) Murphy; 6 grandchildren: Erin, Megan and Molly Murphy, Benjamin, Zachary and Sophia Birner; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 1, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 407 Oak St., Neenah, with Rev. Doug Engelbrecht officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the funeral home, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., and again on Monday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to High Cliff State Park or Trinity Lutheran Church, Neenah.

He ran the good race and has reached his final destination.

I knew John for many years through triathlon and xc skiing. We always seemed to see each other at triathlons all over the world. And of course the Birkie. He was so up beat and positive. He loved participating in so many different events. I will miss him. My condolences to the family. Paula Larsen

Today is his funeral and I'm sad I can't be with you.
Your father was a man full of life...always the most interesting person in the room...always the person the most interested in others.
To think I won't see him again leaves a hole in my heart. Every time I saw him, he would pick me up off the floor for the biggest bear hug ever. Felt so loved!
Life gives and takes away, but I want you to know I will always remember your Father with a special fondness...

Sue and I have been privileged to work in Zambia, Africa for 24 going on 25 years by God's grace. Part of God's grace was John Haselow, my father-in-law, without whose help our time here in Zambia would have been much more difficult--indeed, probably much shorter. John was my power-of-attorney. For absentee parents he made countless school runs, attended various and important school milestones such as athletic events and concerts for my children in the place of their absent parents. He was the multipurpose dad, grandpa and, don't forget doctor my kids needed all through their high school and college years. Space and time do not permit me to get into his work and donations out at the Mwembezhi Rural Health Clinic 80 kilometers out in the bush from Lusaka. Good times will be had by all asking him about that in heaven. John was truly one of the unsung heroes of the Wisconsin Ev. Lutheran Synod World Missions.

Dear Gloria,

Please accept my condolences on John's passing. John was a colleague, a mentor and a friend. He helped me achieve my goal of swimming across Lake Winnebago. Without his advice and encouragement I doubt whether I would have done it.

He also helped a good my friend of mine in her swimming. She had reached a flat spot in her training. In one visit John was quickly able to diagnose her problem and get her back on track. That was over 25 years ago. Recently she won four events in the Masters Swimming program and placed in two other events.

A good physician and a good man.

Doctor Haselow was my doctor when I was a young girl and into my teenage years. Whenever I would see him, he would always smile and shake my hand and ask me how I was doing. He was truly a wonderful man and it saddens me that he has left us. My thoughts and prayers are with your family in this difficult time. Heaven has a new angel watching over us all. John was a excellent physician who cared deeply for his patients. He was clearly ahead of his time in terms of cardiac rehab and fitness. He certainly practiced what he preached in his personal pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. He will be missed by the medical community.

Doc told me things 25 years ago that have come out in modern medicine in recent years. After I left Neenah, I continued to drive 200 miles round trip for his health care and fruitful conversation. He is a part of us all, and I am a better person for having known him. My thoughts are with you all.

John was a special Physician, Exercise Guru, and warm and caring person. I met him through my brother Kim and ran into John at many exercise events, could never keep up to the number of activities he was in, or his enthusiasm for physical fitness and all the benefits that came from them. He was a true friend to the Lulloff family in Neenah and our Lulloff family in Green Bay , although not as closely associated with John, considered him special as well. He and his example will fondly live on in all of us, especially when we are in the water, on the trails or on the skis. Our sincere sympathies to your family .
