Wendy I am so sorry for your loss, and to hear the news. Joe touched my life, for which I am forever grateful to have known him. He was a blessing to so many. I will miss his sense of humor and his many stories. I am so sorry Wendy and family. May his body be at peace now with our heavenly father. Sincerely, Louise Ebben

For most of my childhood, Joe was one of those vague adult presences at my parents' dinner parties. Then I worked the light board at Stansbury Theater for the Makarov Ballet's production of the Nutcracker, with Joe overseeing the backstage details, and spent the volatile summer of 1972 working tech and lighting at Attic Theater when Joe was directing. After that he was the kind of old friend that I would occasionally think to write to from wherever in the world I was, and he would invariably write back. Visiting him one snowy winter during his early years in Bjorklunden is a cherished memory -- long before snow falling on cedars became a movie title, I saw it all along the shoreline. He took an isolated property on the less settled Lake Michigan side and figured out a way to preserve it and make it accessible at the same time. One can definitely say he left the world a better place for the 89 years he lived in it.

Wendy,
I will always cherish the wonderful stories Joe told me about his days aboard the Finback at ROMEOs when I was visiting my father-in-law Glen Wolff there in Appleton. And our trip to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and our tour of the USS Cobia with Joe providing a lot of interesting detail was a treat. He spent some time with me and Glen in your home afterwards going over his photo albums of his submariner days, and I was just entranced hearing those memories! I so hoped I would see him on our last trip to Appleton in May, sadly he wasn't feeling well, but I did enjoy a brief conversation with him, thank you for giving me the opportunity to say hi to him. The photo is from that day he went through his albums with me and Glen.
Best regards,
Blake Bartosh (Carollynn Wolff Bartosh's husband)
