Mark Young Obituary

de Young, Mark W.

Mark W. de Young, 69, of Egg Harbor, formerly of Appleton, Wisconsin, died Wednesday evening, July 13, 2016 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.

He was born October 25, 1946 in Appleton, the son of the late Charles and Mary Lou de Young. Following his graduation from Xavier High School in 1965, Mark served the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. For his service, Mark was recognized with the honor of distinguished serviceman. He had also been a reporter for Stars and Stripes. Mark attended Citrus College in Azusa, CA and UWGB where he studied Economics and Social Work.

On August 28, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Karen A. Brown, in Honolulu, HI while on leave from Vietnam. Mark was the founder and CEO of Valley Gasket in Appleton. He and Karen retired to Door County.

Mark was an avid reader and a student of Maritime History including Lord Nelson. He was an accomplished bird watcher and community volunteer. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing golf, and telling stories.

Mark's volunteer spirit was shown throughout his life with a credo to always give back to the community. It was evident in the volunteer hours spent delivering Meals on Wheels, Loaves and Fishes, and his dedication to the restoration of the tug John Purves. He was the President of the Royal Order of Toads.

His family includes his first love, wife, Karen of Egg Harbor; three children, Ben (Carrie) de Young of Appleton, Nick (Lindsay) de Young of Jacksonport, Will de Young of Appleton; five grandchildren, Jack, George, Frankie, Lydia, Sylas; five siblings, Charles (Geri) de Young of Fort Mill, SC, Daniel (Cathy) de Young of Rome, GA, Tina (Mickey) Ledford of Rock Hill, SC, Michael (Kathy) de Young of Rock Hill, SC, Barbara Anthony of Neenah.

There will be a celebration of Mark's life at a later date to be announced. Memorials may be given to a charity of your choice.

I only knew Mark for a short time but it is a time I will cherish always. We met as members of the "John Perves " restoration crew, his dedication to the completion of the project and to the crew we worked with will stay with me always.

Please accept my most sincere sympathy, he will never be forgotten.

Hi Karen:

Giff just called us. SO sorry for your loss ... for you pain and grieving. Mark was (is) surely one of the 'keeper's of our class of 65. We have adoration in the EAC at Sacred Heart FdL on Wednesday. We'll write Mark (and his family) into the 'Book of Prayers' and light a candle in celebration of his life. There were (are) many success stories from married classmates at XHS65. So many ( 99.% ) of us returned from Vietnam. Maybe it (all) had something to do with the prayers and sacrifices of our parents. Or maybe it had something to do with our Catholic/Christian heritage. In any event; may God be pleased to bless Mark, his life and times, and those mourning his absence.

I grew up with Mark, and went through school with him. His mom and mine were best friends. I remember when my dad bought this used Triumph TR3 while I was at Xavier. He let Mark drive it before me. I will never forget Mark speeding down the driveway on Elm Street around the Court House in that car just just roaring with laughter at me . My dad was probably right, I later stripped the gears in that car.

I remember Mark as a young happy guy.

Karen, I want to send you and your family my sincerest sympathy. I am sure Mark is lighting up heaven with his laughter.

Mark was one fine gentleman and fellow "Tug Guy". I enjoyed working on the tug with him. He liked to work fast and needed a follow-up guy to finish things off. I'm sad to see our ranks declining. His spirit will rest with all those wonderful "gaskets" on the John Purves. My condolences to you Karen and your family.
