Mary Magnus Obituary

Mary Owen Magnus, 77, joined her family in Heaven on Wednesday evening, Sept. 21, 2011. Mary was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Cumberland County, N.C., daughter of the late George B and Mary B. (Phillips) Owen. While working along Wilmington Beach, N.C., Mary met James Magnus who was serving in the United States Marine Corps. They married in 1956 and made their home in Appleton and later Menasha.

Mary worked for 20 years in data processing at Theda Clark Medical Center, retiring in 1995.

In the early 1970's, Mary and Jim took in a Pug they named Twinkles which started Mary on a road to being a Pug lover and breeder. Marmag Kennel was born and Mary was successful in breeding, raising and showing Pugs, including many champions. She joined a friend, Jane Louvar, to create MaJa's Pugs and together they continued the success and raised another champion. Mary was very involved in the Winnegamie Dog Club and the Greater Milwaukee Pug Club.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always had a smile for everyone, her doors were always open to family and friends and she will be greatly missed.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Daphne Lynn (Keith) Hawkins, Appleton; two grandchildren, Jonathan Hawkins, Fond du Lac; and Elizabeth (Kevin) Hawkins-Schmidt, New Berlin; and a great-granddaughter, Noelle Grace Hawkins-Schmidt. Also survived by Tom Kargus, Virginia Magnus, two nieces, a nephew and a dear friend, Jane Louvar.

Mary has been reunited with her husband, Jim, her son, Jimmy, her daughter, Sandy Kargus, and her infant son, Steven. Joining the reunion are her parents, brother, sister and her beloved Pugs.

Funeral services for Mary will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kathy Keener-Han of Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday morning from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
