Maureen McAvoy Obituary

McAvoy, Maureen A.

Maureen A McAvoy, 71, of Neenah, passed away peacefully with family at her bedside on Sunday, January 3, 2016, at Theda Clark Medical Center after a long illness. She was born on January 23, 1944, in Chicago, to Patrick and Dorothy Dowling. Having met in college, Maureen married Paul McAvoy in 1966 and moved to Neenah in 1975. Family was her first concern. She was a loving, spirited mother of four boys. Maureen enjoyed attending their numerous soccer, hockey, and basketball games. She very much enjoyed being with friends for birthday celebrations, book clubs, holiday gatherings and exercise at the YMCA. Maureen was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Parish, Neenah. She was a lector, communion distributor and Human Concerns Committee member. Maureen participated in community projects such as Meals on Wheels, Community Table, Community Fest and United Way. She loved gardening, flowers of all kinds, reading, traveling and crafts. Maureen was always proud of her Irish heritage. She will be missed by friends and family.

Maureen is survived by her husband: Dr. Paul McAvoy; sons: Brian McAvoy, Timothy McAvoy, Michael (Leah) McAvoy, and John (Emily) McAvoy; grandchildren: Adam, Andrew, Sarah, Meghan, Ian, Cole, and Layla; sister: Donna (Terry) Sbertoli; brother, Patrick Dowling; sister-in-law: Kathleen (Terry) Samnadda.

In addition to her parents, Maureen was also preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 620 Division St., Neenah, with Fr. Michael Ingold officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be Friday, January 8, 2016, at Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial Ave., from 4:30PM-7:30PM and again on Saturday, at the church, from 9AM until the time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Special thank you to the Nurses and Doctors at Theda Clark Medical Center for their care and compassion.

Dear Paul and Family,
I was sorry to learn of Maureen's passing when I went to Mass last nite. I knew Maureen because we both visited our friend, Arlene. We saw you in church, and she also was on Faith Enrichmt. Commmittee when I joined it. I send my sincere condolences.

I have fond memories of Mrs. McAvoy from my childhood when I attended St. Margaret Mary's Grade School to years later when I would see her at the Neenah-Menasha YMCA. She was always quick with a compliment and genuinely interested in catching up on family news! I pray that bright memories of the past will bring light to all her "boys" during moments of dark grief.

Mrs. Mcavoy is a good friend of my parents and ever since I was a young child, I always enjoyed her great sense of humor at social gatherings. I am thinking of her wonderful family at this time and may her sense of humor be enjoyed by others up in Heaven.
