Richard Rosengrant Obituary

Sgt. Richard Michael Rosengrant, 30, of Kingston passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 30, 2014.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of Richard M. Rosengrant, Wilkes-Barre, and Helen Rosengrant-Briody and Mark Briody, Kingston. Ricky was a graduate of Hanover Area High School, Class of 2002.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. A combat veteran, he served with the 82nd Airborne during Operation Enduring Freedom (Iraq). Serving in a designated imminent danger area, he was the recipient of numerous commendations, including a Purple Heart, USA/USAF Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Service Ribbon, Infantryman Badge, and Parachutist Badge.

Ricky was a fan of the Eagles and Phillies and enjoyed fishing. He was always smiling and loved to make others laugh, a gift he came by naturally.

Preceding him in death was his maternal grandfather, Wilbert Rosengrant.

Surviving, in addition to his father, mother and stepfather, are his daughter, Cameryn Wellington; paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Rosengrant, Wilkes-Barre; maternal grandmother, Anita Coleman, Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Eileen Rosengrant, Kingston; and Jennifer Rosengrant, Wilkes-Barre; niece, Abrielle Garrahan; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Ignatius Loyola Parish Church, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Harold C. Snowdon Home for Funerals Inc., 420 Wyoming Ave., Kingston.

Interment with military honors accorded by the Luzerne County Military Funeral Honor Guard will be made at 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Cemetery, 1594 S. Main St., Hanover Township.

I was stunned when I heard about the passing of Ricky Rosengrant. You see, I was his recruiter. I remember the day that I was standing behind my table set up at Hanover Area High School talking to a bunch of rowdy 9th and 10th graders when this kid walks up. There was something in his eyes that any recruiter worth his salt would recognize as smart, determined and capable. I asked him, "have you eveer thought about joining the Army?" (standard line....I was still wet behind the ears as a recruiter). He told me, "Oh...I'm joining the Army! I want to be a Ranger." This was the first time that I had ever heard this spoken with such conviction. He was just a Junior then so not able to enlist Active Army. I remember going out to meet with his Mother Helen when the PA National Guard was trying to get him to enlist as a Junior. I explained the fact that if he wanted Airborne in his contract, he would have to wait for the Active Army. He waited. That was over 12 years ago now and I have reached the end of my career. Saddened does not reach the depth of how hard this hit me. Let me tell you something about recruiters...we consider our enlistees OUR TROOPERS! The loss of this Trooper hurt me to my core. Someday, SGT Rosengrant, I will heft a pint with you on Fiddler's Green. We shall all miss you Hero.

To the Rosengrant Family:

Please accept my sincerest and deepest sympathies for your loss of your son. Although I did not know Richard, I felt it is my duty, on behalf of a grateful nation, to thank him for his service to his country. Most people don't realize, we civilians ARE his country, and therefore have the duty & the responsibility of thanking ALL service members, especially those who are on the front lines for allowing us to go about our everyday lives in the safety and security they provide us. Rest easy in the Arms of the Angels Richard, for you have truly earned it and again thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your service to us......your country.
