Richard Schurer Obituary

Richard Schurer, 74, Neenah, passed from this life into his next journey on March 20, 2012. Skip was born on August 14, 1937, the son of the late Gertrude (Weber DelFosse) and the late Arthur Schurer Sr. He was employed at American Can and spent 42 years working for Pansy Lawn and Garden Store. Skip attended St. Mary's High School where Coach Ralph McClone was a major influence. His athletic achievements were many: All American, All State, All Conference and Most Valuable. He was inducted into St. Mary's Hall of Fame. Skip was proud to be a member of St. Mary's High School undefeated football team, recently celebrating their 50th anniversary. He entered the United States Marine Corps after high school, from 1956 to 1958 where he continued his football career. He earned a degree in Radio Telegraph Communications. Skip's memories of the U.S. Marines are many, especially his close friendship with Patrick Burns of Dallas, TX and Logan Franklin of San Raphael, CA. Skip continued to play semi-pro football with the Manitowoc Chiefs and semi-pro basketball with the Neenah Mavericks. He tried out for the Green Bay Packers in 1958 and had the opportunity to play basketball against the Harlem Globetrotters. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, dancing, darts, golfing and hunting up North with his brothers. Skip especially enjoyed camping with his girls.

Skip is survived by 4 daughters: Kelly (William) Strieder and their daughter, Lexi, Sarasota, FL; Karie Schurer, Neenah; Kris Schurer (friend Matt Wilkes), Neenah; Kasandra Schurer (friend Dennis Mueller), Neenah; his loving partner of 30 years, Joann Stratton and her children: James, Curt and his son, Pierson Stratton; loyal companion Issie; brothers and sisters: Gene Farr (friend Sandy), Menasha; Dick Farr (friend Kathy), Crooked Lake; Arthur "Butch" Schurer (friend Cathy), Menasha; Joan (Dave) Linert, Neenah; Peggy (Don) Koepfel, Menasha; Dolly (John) Mischler, Appleton; Connie Gaschler (friend Rick), Menasha; Debbie (Jim) Schwehr, Victor, MT; sister-in-law, Tammi Schurer, Appleton; former wife, Debra Newman, Cripple Creek, CO; Joann's mother, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Skip was preceded in death by his wife of 17 years, Terri Pansy Schurer; mother, Gertrude DelFosse; Ken Farr (the man he called Dad); brother, Ronald Schurer and sister-in-law, Sharon Farr.

A prayer service will be held at the 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial St., Neenah with Fr. James Leary O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Entombment will follow. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Skip's name.
