Steven Wilson Obituary

Steven L. Wilson, Town of Vandenbroek, age 57, died Monday June 3, 2013. He was born in Elkhorn on February 11, 1956 to Norman and Kate (Roemer) Wilson. Steve completed his undergraduate studies at Lawrence University before graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. Steve married Debrah Kaufman at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Little Chute on August 29, 2004. Steve operated his own law practice in Appleton and greatly appreciated his legal secretaries, Nancy Chevalier and Sheina Fonder. In addition to his parents, Steven is survived by his wife, Debbie; children: Philip, Little Chute; and Julia, Chicago; their mother, Patti Wilson, Appleton; step daughters Jessica Dercks, Little Chute; and Shannon (Jon) Callies, Peachtree City, GA; grandchildren: Alexis, Isaac, Anna, Dominic, Grace, Will and Brynn; brothers: Rod (Ann) and his twin Stan (Lisa); father-in-law Joe Kaufman; Debbie’s siblings: JoAnn Koehnke, Ginna (Jack) Heegeman, Dave (Linda), Judy (Roger) Regeth, Mike, Ralph (Diane), Mary (Steve) Ready, Greg (Kim), Dan (Laurie) and Ann (Ken) Hansen; aunts: Mary Wilson and Caroline (David) Willis; and nieces and nephews: Jordan (Andrea), Megan, Erin, Shannon, Nate and Meredith Wilson and Brianna (Brian) Lunde. He is further survived by other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his mother-in-law Vivian Kaufman; and uncle Howard Wilson. Steve would always say that you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes. Steve Wilson was a man with a wide variety of very interesting shoes, each for a specific occasion in his life. He was a man who enjoyed the beauty in this world and enjoyed even more so in sharing it with the people he loved. Travel destinations with those close to him were always a high point for Steve. Two of his favorite locations included Florida and Chicago. The city provided ample opportunities for him to educate those with him on its rich history and he often marveled at the level of detail that goes into operating and maintaining Disneyland, a place he visited on fifteen separate occasions. In almost all of his adventures you’d find his loving wife Debbie right at his side. They enjoyed their time to pray, their time to travel, and their time together. They never departed a morning together without a kiss good bye, a strong testament to the bond that they shared. As a father, Steve enjoyed taking road trips with his son Philip and playing tennis with his daughter Julia, amongst a myriad of other activities. He loved playing sports with his grandkids and was a consummate instructor, always trying to help the kids learn. In his spare time Steve loved being with his family. He loved barbeques in the backyard, Sunday morning brunch, Brewer games, Packer games, and a good round of golf. In his personal time he enjoyed reading, especially material based on history, taking in a good movie, and listening to classical music. Steve lived his life with an appreciation for the good things in this world and was an ambassador to generosity like no other. He leaves behind a set of well-worn shoes and families that will always remember the good times and the simplicity with which he approached them. Visitation will be held Thursday June 6, 2013 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St. Little Chute) beginning at 2:00 p.m. until time of Mass at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Msgr. James Vanden Hogen will officiate. Committal St. Mary Cemetery, Appleton. To sign the guest book, please visit oconnellfh.com. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.

I am very sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I had the privilege of working against Steve a few years ago on a difficult and emotionally charged case. Steve was pragmatic and professional throughout, and he treated this young lawyer with kindness and genuine humanity. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

July 8, 2013

dear Mrs. Wilson & Family, I can not begin to express my sympathy for you all. I was only blessed to have been touched by Steve on one occassion, but I can tell you, he truly exemplified the kindness & generosity you all spoke of in the memories of his obituary. May the Lord's Comforting Spirit be with you all knowing what a very gentle Spirit Steve was, even to those whose lives he just touched upon. With kind Regards, S. L. Graves

My condolences to the family. I just met Steve when I was hired to defend a suit he filed. He was a real gentleman. Just a few short weeks ago we chatted about the joys and troubles in life - quite an unusual conversation for adversaries. I know (because he told me and showed me pictures) that he worshipped his wife and his family brought him much joy. We will miss him in the profession.

Debbie and family,
You have been in our thoughts and prayers all week. Steve was such a kind man. My husband worked in the Appleton Center with Steve as a fellow solo practitioner. I work at the Sigman firm and had the pleasure of visiting with Steve often when he stopped by to see Jim, Mark and Brian. Steve took the time to really get to know us and he really cared when he asked how things were going. As a younger lawyer that is so rare to find from an older experienced attorney. We learned a lot from Steve in a short time. He will be missed by so many.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my good friend Steven Wilson. I shared 4 years with Steve at Lawrence University. Freshman year on first floor Plantz Hall, and 3 more years as Delta Tau Delta fraternity brothers. His nickname was "Willie". So many great memories. After college, whenever I made it back to Appleton, visiting Steve and his family was a priority. My heart goes out to Patti, Julia, Philip, and all the rest of his family and friends.

Debbie and family,
My heart is so heavy...I felt such sadness to hear of Steve's passing. We used to pop back and forth across the hall to chat, but he used to bring us chocolate to brighten our day. Steve was a great guy and I considered him a good friend. Heaven will now be an even better place with Steve there and he now knows the peace our Lord has promised us. May God comfort you all; He is with you and holding you tight. May tears turn to smiles as you recall the wonderful memories.

Phil and Julia,
I am so sorry for your loss. I had the privilege of playing on the Bergstrom Little League team and having your dad as a coach. Your dad is the reason I was passionate about the sport, and I learned so much about the game from him. But it wasn't until I got a little older that I realized your dad had been teaching us about so much more than softball. I have never had a coach who was more supportive, encouraging, and genuinely committed to developing not just great athletes but good human beings than your dad was. He had an incredibly profound effect on all of us and the support he offered while we were in the dugout or warming up on the field stayed with us all long after the last out of the game. I will remember him always with the utmost fondest and the greatest respect. Both of you and your entire family will be in my prayers during this difficult time.

Steve was one of the most personable people I have EVER met. It was always so nice to take a break and visit with Steve when he'd pop back in at the law firm, for whatever reason, and especially at Christmastime when, without fail, he delivered my co-worker and I a box of chocolates to share. Steve always made time to have a real conversation. Such a loss.
