Thomas Malueg Obituary

Malueg, Thomas John

Thomas J. Malueg M.D., of Neenah, age 75, passed away on August 23, 2011 after a short stay at Cherry Meadows. He was born on Dec. 29, 1935, in Clintonville, WI, the son of Orval and Janet (Kelly) Malueg. He married Judith Papenfuss of Wausau in June of 1960.

Tom graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1957 and the UW School of Medicine in 1961. He interned in San Francisco and completed a residency in Psychiatry in Madison. Tom served in the US Navy during the Vietnam war treating veterans at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA. In 1969, Tom began practicing psychiatry at the Riverside Clinic in Menasha and was instrumental in starting the psychiatric unit at Theda Clark Hospital during that time. Later positions in his career included the Director of Community Mental Health Services Board of Oakland County, MI, and the Director of Mental Health for the State of Minnesota. Before he retired, he was Executive Director of United Behavioral Systems, the mental health branch of United Health Care in Minnesota.

As a proud member of the UW Marching Band during his time in college, Tom was a drummer who fondly remembered games in Madison at Camp Randall Stadium. Tom was a talented chef and had a passion for cooking, collected cookbooks and was a connoisseur of good food, especially French cuisine. He traveled to France twice to attend cooking schools there. Tom loved his family, books, art museums, European travel, and especially the family cottage "up north" and good times spent there with family and friends. He was a very caring, perceptive person who was happy helping others and who touched many lives. He valued his years as a hospice volunteer for ThedaCare at Home and as a Eucharistic minister for St. Margaret Mary Church. He lived an honorable life and will be missed by many whose lives he touched.

Tom is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy, and two sons: Mark (Anne) and their children, Madeline, Katherine, and Emily, Wilmette, IL, and Kurt (Kim) and their son, Henry, Madison, WI. Also surviving are a brother, Douglas Malueg and a sister, Rosemary Solberg, both of Clintonville, as well as a niece, nephews and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by son Michael in 1973; his parents; and parents-in-law: Albert and Mabel Papenfuss of Wausau.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 2011 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 620 Division St., Neenah with Fr. Michael Ingold officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. A time of visitation and support will be held from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial St., Neenah and at the church from 10:00 a.m. Monday until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to ThedaCare at Home Hospice or St. Margaret Mary Church.

The family wishes to thank ThedaCare at Home and Cherry Meadows for their help and support.

Sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I haven't seen him in years but Aunt Janet used to always keep me up on what he was doing. I was an altar boy at Tom and Judy's wedding. (I'm Tom's cousin). I remember that occasion and can still remember seeing Tom march in a parade when he was in the band at U.W.

Please extend our condolences to the rest of the family

Tom will be in our memories forever. He was a dear friend and we will always remember the wonderful moments that we spent together from college days, San Francisco and our moments in Wisconsin. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
