Glen Longhurst Obituary

Glen Reed Longhurst, 77, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of May 12, 2021 after a heroic fight against severe pneumonia secondary to COVID-19. Glen-as he was known professionally, Reed-as he was known by family and friends, blessed the lives of many, near and far. With a mind and heart as towering as his stature, he built a legacy of wisdom, love, and service. Please view the full obituary at http://www.sumortuary.com/. In 1978 my wife of five months was baptized. Bishop Robert E. Taylor and his counselor, Reed Longhurst, attended the service. It was during a time when Reed was in Fort Collins as a Ph.D. candidate. I remember his towering frame and engulfing handshake, a gentle, welcoming man, age 34 at the time, and new to us as we merged into the gospel, the ward, and life. This great fellow has come to mind often in the years since. He was there, a witness to a baptism ordinance that paired us onto the covenant path and united us as newlyweds. Forty-three years later, September 2021, we have only now discovered Brother Longhurst is gone. May his family live on in the light of his life so well-lived.

I met Glen at the family history center while serving as a Family History Consultant. He was towering in stature and his knowledge of family history. He cared about his consultants and treated us all equally. I know he missed serving this past year as we all did. I will miss him. Gary Whittaker

So sorry to hear about the death of Elder Longhurst. We treasure our missionary memories with the Longhursts in Detroit. Elder Longhurst and Sister Longhurst were the closest in assignment to us. We identified with their struggles. And they identified with our struggles as well. We love you sister Longhurst and wish you the best.
Love to you, David and Ileen Coats

Jean and Family, life has a way of turning our paths into one not expected. I was sorry to hear of Reed's passing at this sad time. I have fond memories of growing up with Reed way back in elementary school. Then my parents moved away from Logan and I lost track until you both were at Utah State University. You all have made such a monumental contribution to mankind. Jean, I often think of you whenever I drive by your old family home. Best wishes now, as you move on with your lives. May you be blessed with calmness and love.

I was sad to learn of Glen's passing. He was a great boss, here at SUU, for the short time we worked together as he retired a few months after hiring me. I am grateful to have been able to know him. He was a very kind and intelligent person!

I really enjoyed the time Brother and Sister Longhurst spent on my shift at the Family History Center. It felt good to have him as our priesthood representative on that shift. I'm truly sorry that the Longhursts won't be leading our Familiy HIstory Center. So Sorry to hear of his passing.

What a wonderful man, and a life well lived. Bishop Longhurst was the bishop of my teenage years and was my bishop when I left on my mission. So kind and gentle. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Dear Jean and Family- We in the Duncan Family are all so saddened to hear of Reed's passing. He was a selfless friend who had a profound effect on each of us. His patient and loving example was there consistently through Wendy, David, and Chris's adolescent years in mutual and scouting, and he was a dedicated friend and colleague as we served in the Shamrock Park Ward and the Idaho Falls South Stake. Our prayers and thoughts are with you for comfort and peace.

I met Reed during our college engineering days at Utah State University—who wouldn’t notice such a tall, handsome, intelligent fellow engineering student! He married Jean, a friend since second grade. After USU graduation, Reed and Jean disappeared to Idaho, where they raised a large family and he excelled in building a company. I was so excited when we could reconnect when Reed (Glen) moved to Cedar City to become a dean and lead a new technology and engineering college at Southern Utah University. Reed and Jean then went on an LDS mission to Detroit, Michigan, which was one of the most dangerous missions in the world. I have admired Reed for many years and was saddened to hear of his moving on to his next life. Best wishes and love to Jean, his family, and his many friends.
