Harvard Bitter, 90, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, in his home at Morningstar Senior Living of Idaho Falls. His family appreciates the care from the compassionate people of Hands of Hope Hospice.
Harvard was born June 29, 1924, in Ririe, Idaho, to Eizabeth Adams and Vernon Erikson Bitter. He graduated from the eighth grade in Ucon, Idaho. Then his family moved to Tule Lake, Calif., where his family farmed.
When he was a senior in high school, Pearl Harbor was bombed. He completed high school and then enlisted in the Air Force. He was trained as a bomber pilot. He flew 48 missions through the Philippine campaign.
When the war was over, he returned to his family, who were now living south of Idaho Falls on a farm. He joined his father in the business of farming. He has spent his life farming with his father and then his sons, in the Shelley area and Terreton, Idaho.
He has been active in civic and church affairs, serving on the Federal Land Bank board for many years, Idaho Co-op Council and Shelley School board.
He served LDS missions in Mexico, Guatemala and Ecuador, also as a bishop, high counselor, teacher and a mission president in Peru. His life was spent in service to his family, his church and his community.
He married Evada Orme on Dec. 18, 1953, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They are the parents of eight children, 40 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; sisters, Carmen (Garth) Hall of Idaho Falls and Gay (Milt) Carlson of Pocatello; brother, Ronald (Lorraine) Bitter of Queen Creek, Ariz.; and children, Lance (Junae) Bitter of Tomah, Wis., Janine (Lance) Christensen of Yuma, Ariz., Kent (Betty Ann) Bitter of Shelley, Lisa (David) Jackson of Glendora, Calif., Daren (Kathy) Bitter of Terreton, Myra (Gregg) Sharp of Idaho Falls, Lanae (Dave) Kener of Pocatello and Greg (Amanda) Bitter of St. Anthony.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Sand Creek Ward Chapel, 1101 E. 1250 North in Shelley. Viewings will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W. Oak St. in Shelley, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. Saturday prior to services at the chapel. Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park with military rites by David B. Bleak Post 93 assisted by the Idaho Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the LDS missionary fund.

Sister Evada, this is Alice Sievers Mortimer. I would like to say your family means so much to me and all the fond memories living close as neighbors in Shelly and being in the gospel with you Evada. Ours thoughts and prayers are with you always. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family, you have been a great example to me as I was growing up. We used to babysit your kids, Julie and /alice Sievers. My Dad is also 90 years old on the 14 of September, 1924. Served in the Navy also in the Philippines. thank you for you being so kind to our family threw the years. God bless you Sister Bitter.

Evada and family, Darth and I want you to know our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. You have a wonderful large family that surrounds you today and will be there for you always.
We see Lanae quite often and she always lets us know how you and Harvard were doing. Lanae is such a sweet heart, she called me today, to let us know about Harvard.

We were saddened to hear of Bro Bitter's passing and want to send our heartfelt condolences to the family. Bro Bitter was the Home Teacher when Debbie and I were courting. We always looked forward to his visits because he made us all feel important. May God bless all of you at this time and know that you are loved and prayed for.
