Leon Weston Obituary

Leon "Slim" Weston passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.

Leon was born Sept. 18, 1941, at Teton Valley Medical Center. He attended school in Driggs, Idaho, graduating from Teton High School in 1960. He joined the United States Army on Nov. 26, 1963, and served until Nov. 27, 1965. He was a Vietnam veteran. He later went to diesel mechanic school in Provo, Utah.

Leon "Slim" Weston was a larger-than-life personality whose smile, kind words and quick wit touched the lives of all who knew him. Slim will be remembered as a friend to all.

A Teton Valley original, both his face and name have become nearly synonymous with Grand Targhee, the place he thought of as his home away from home. His genuine smile and big hugs reached out to people in a way that warmed the soul -- even on the coldest of days. He embodied the spirit of Grand Targhee, as he was never down and always made everyone feel welcome. His ever-present smile, the twinkle in his eyes and his sincere friendliness to all made every day a special day at Targhee.

To his siblings, he will be remembered as patient. He didn't get angry at mistakes, he just helped fix them. He loved animals and the outdoors, especially in winter. Leon was generous with a smile.

To his son, Troy (Kristin), he will be remembered as a kind, encouraging supporter. While others called him Slim, Troy proudly called him dad. To Troy, his dad was not only a great friend but a friend who taught him how to ski, snowmobile and become a champion wrestler by wrestling with him every night after practice. He, most importantly, instilled the need to be kind and good to everyone.

To his daughter, Chandra Plennes (Chris, Ariana, Quinn), he will be remembered as a friend, a mentor and someone who knew how to fix anything. He taught the values of being honest, hardworking and friendly to everyone, and he never undervalued a gal who could back up a trailer.

To his grandchildren, Olyvia and Bridger, he will be remembered as their biggest fan and the guy who, no matter what, knew they could do anything with a little effort.

To his wife, Cindy, Leon was a proud family man. He loved his family deeply.

His grandchildren were the love of his life and he loved his daughter-in-law and son-in-law as if they were his own. His happiest times in life were spent with family. She will be forever thankful for time spent with one of the kindest men ever known.

In his honor, services will be open to the public and held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the LDS Stake Center at 225 N. First East in Driggs, with viewings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday prior to services, both at the stake center. A celebration of life gathering will follow at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Grand Targhee.
