Martin Steinkamp Obituary

Martin Steinkamp, age 92 of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025.

He was born on October 11, 1932, in Bielefeld, Germany to parents Hermann and Luise Steinkamp. Being sponsored by his Aunt Johanna Klusmann, he immigrated to the United States, became a naturalized citizen, and served his new country in the U.S. Army.

On December 16, 1955, he married Madeline Heuer at St. John Lutheran Church. They were married for over 69 years.

Martin often saw life through a cautious lens. Beneath his thoughtful exterior, friendly smile, and distinctive accent, he worried deeply-not for himself, but for those he loved. He noticed if someone he loved seemed unwell and showed his love through fierce protection and steady support.

He found joy in life's simple pleasures; Gardening, building or fixing things, and spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He deeply loved recreating at the family cabin in Island Park. Sweets were his delight: Waffles with strawberries, caramels, peanut brittle, and pie or cake with a scoop of ice cream were his favorites.

Martin built a respected career as an electric motor repairman with Electric Motor Service, where he worked for 40 years before retiring. He was known for his dedication, diagnosis expertise, integrity, and customer service.

He fought aging with pride, determination, and grit. Even as his heart and body began to fail, his purpose never wavered, he continued forward; supported by Madeline, his family, and caregivers.

He blessed us immeasurably and left us when he felt comfortable that loved ones were safe and strong enough to carry on without him. We feel his absence deeply, but we are comforted by the knowledge and joy of salvation won through faith in Jesus.

Martin is survived by his wife Madeline, children Melanie (Todd) Mary, Laurel (Derek) Flynn, and grandchildren Cody Flynn, Chad Flynn, Megan (Joe) Bowers, Madi Mary, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Margarethe Erickson.

Funeral services will be held on May 17th at 11:00AM at St. John Lutheran Church, 290 7th St., with Pastor Stephen Weems officiating. Family will meet relatives and friends an hour before the service. A graveside service will follow at Fielding Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St John Lutheran Church.

Martin was a very kind, caring, and respectful gentleman that I had the pleasure of working with for over 11 years until his retirement. People would come in the shop and ask what ever happened to the German fellow who worked at that bench. I would happily say with a smile on my face that he was probably at his cabin getting ready to go snowmobiling as he and I did several times together. He has left this earth and will be missed BUT will never be forgotten. My Condolence to Madeline, Melanie, Laurel, and family. Sincerely, Wayne Hill
