Maxine Briggs Obituary

Maxine Boase Briggs, 94, of Zephyr, Texas, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, in Brownwood, Texas.

She was born Feb. 25, 1915, in Lyons, Texas, the daughter of C.R. (Charles Rass) and Montez Boase. She married James Blackford Briggs on Feb. 14, 1941. He preceded her in death Aug. 12, 1969.

Maxine graduated from Zephyr High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in education from Daniel Baker University in Brownwood. She met her husband, James, when he was doing heavy equipment work in the Camp Bowie area. After they were married, they spent their summer months dry land wheat and barley farming in Teton City, Idaho, where James was born and raised. After the harvest was completed, they then returned to Zephyr to spend the winter helping her parents work the cattle ranch since her father was employed full-time with the Santa Fe Railroad.

Maxine enjoyed life and family at its fullest. She loved to travel, especially when it involved going to watch and cheer on her grandchildren and most recently her great-granddaughters at their many activities ranging from rodeos, stock shows or basketball games.

Maxine was a big supporter of the Zephyr community. She loved to go to community events and it did not matter if she knew the kids. She just loved to be a part of the community. She was never afraid of hard work and enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors. Maxine was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be truly missed by all.

She is survived by her only daughter, Jenny Lynn Smith of Zephyr, Texas; her grandchildren, Jamie Smith of Zephyr, Texas, and Jennifer (Dane) Driver of Garden City, Texas; three great-granddaughters, Jessica Smith, Jaylin Smith and Jordan Driver; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Briggs and Arminda Briggs, both of Teton City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters-in-law, Mary Briggs Parker, Florence Briggs Lent and Eva Briggs Cutler; and three brothers-in-law, Bert Briggs, Joe Briggs and Glen Briggs.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the Teton LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Teton-Newdale Cemetery under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.flammfh.com.
