To the family of Ray Goodwin,
I just found out about the passing of your father and grandfather Ray. I served with Ray in Viet Nam on team RT Ohio. Your father was a wonderful person and great friend; I will miss him tremendously.
I first met Ray when Ollie Hartwig and I picked him to be on our recon team, RT Ohio. We didn’t know anything about him but he looked like a good guy and was about the same size as us and that was important in case you had to carry him out of a battle. During the first week and getting acquainted he told us about playing basketball in college and I told him we had a basketball game every night. As soon as he got some sneakers he joined us for our usual game after chow and the basketball game changed completely after that. The first night he played on my team and passed the ball to everyone so we could shoot and our team was losing very quickly. Ray decided to take over and quickly we were winning by five or six baskets. He blocked other guys shots and went down the court and scored every time he shot the ball. After the game I asked him why he didn’t say he could play like that. He then told me he was a small college All American. That was typical of Ray; he never boasted about his accomplishments. He gave me a line I have often told people about my basketball abilities. He said to me one night, “Tim, you have one of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen, except the ball just doesn’t go in the hoop.”
Ray always seemed to have a smile on his face and was a joy to be around for everyone that knew him. My time in Viet Nam was over before his was and when I left Kontum, we hugged and said we would stay in touch. About 10 years ago or so he found me through the internet and called. We spoke for about an hour and a half; it just seemed like two old buddies talking. We talked about getting together for one of the SOAR conventions but we never did. I know that all of you are very proud of him as you should be. He will be missed by all of the CCC military guys.
I have included some pictures that mean a great deal to me and you can see more of him in the MAC V SOG Team history, volume 11, by Jason Hardy.
May God bless Ray and all of you at this time of sorrow.
Tim Lynch RT Ohio 1969-1970.

Ray was a friend of my childhood and youth. We played together growing up, then hunting with other fun adventures and then football and basketball at Blackfoot High. We worked together in the potato fields and moving pipe, etc. Many great memories. The last time we were together was at our 60th high school reunion this last September. Sorry it was our last here on this earth. Goodbye for now Ray. See you down river.
