Carole Newell Obituary

Carole Overton Newell

February 3, 1943 - September 25, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carole Overton Newell, after a short battle with cancer, on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the age of 81, in Glens Falls, N.Y.

Born on February 3, 1943, in Adams, N.Y., Carole was the daughter of Ralph and Virginia Overton. Carole graduated from Adams High School and earned degrees in English, Special Education and School Administration from SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Albany, pursuing her passion for both learning and teaching.

Carole also had passions for cooking and business. She was a farm girl turned foodie, who combined these interests by opening several restaurants in Glens Falls, N.Y., including "Samantha's Pantry", "The Backdoor Café" and "Samantha's Cafe & Catering" where she shared her love of cooking with her community. After selling "Samantha's Pantry," Carole moved to Bolton Landing, N.Y., where she continued to connect with her community by working as a substitute teacher in local schools, as a librarian at the public library and as a caretaker for the historical museum of Bolton Landing.

Throughout her life, Carole was an avid reader and a talented writer. She had a keen eye for art and antiques and was an expert in decorating and gardening. She shared her creativity through her knitting, crafting winter hats for friends and family, and through the artistic touch she displayed throughout her home. Carole shared a fierce pride in her children and grandchildren, who referred to her affectionately as "Lala."

Carole loved to entertain friends and family in her home, always bringing warmth and laughter to every gathering. Whether it was showing off her bargains from the local auction house, challenging others in bridge, or impressing all with her delicious mac and cheese and chocolate cake, Carole lived her life to the fullest and opened her home for others to share it with her.

Carole had a deep love for animals, especially her beloved dog, Bodie, who was her loyal companion for the past 14 years. She and Bodie greeted neighbors and tourists alike from her front porch on Sagamore Rd. in Bolton Landing.

Carole is survived by her son, Mark Newell (Melanie) of New York City; her daughter, Samantha Newell Moody (Jody) of Nashville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Olivia Moody, Meredith Moody, Griffin Moody, and Jasper Newell; her sister, Patricia Overton Jones (Peter) of Wilmington, N.C.; her brother, Ralph "Sandy" Overton, of Adams, N.Y.; and her former husband, Eli "Bud" Newell of Albany, N.Y. She is also survived by her dear friends, Sally and Brian Washburn, George Goodwin, Anne Green, Marcia Kretchmer, and Laura Breakenridge who were all so loving and supportive during her final days.

A celebration of Carole's life will be held on October 26th at 2 p.m. at the Bolton Historical Museum, 4924 Lake Shore Dr., Bolton Landing, NY, where friends and family are invited to share memories of her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Carole's name to the ASPCA.

I offer my deepest sympathy to Carole´s family and friends!
I am so sad to hear of Carole´s passing ! I met Carole at her Samantha´s Cafe in Glen´s Falls many years ago as one of her customers who enjoyed her great desserts and sharing a love for antiques !
When Carole moved to Bolton, she became part of our lovely Community !
I enjoyed her friendliness and our occasional morning chat after I picked up my cup of coffee at the Cafe across the street , finding her sitting on her front porch with her friendly dog or working in her garden or holding one of her great garage sales . She was always a delight and I will miss seeing her out and about town or on her front porch on the Sagamore Road!

Rest in Peace dear Carole

My sincere condolences on the loss of your Mother. I knew her growing up with Mark. I remember specifically walking into the Newell´s house smelling all the great food she cooked. She would test cookie recipes on us. I remember also how passionate she was about her kids and to ensure they were always making the right choices. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. May the memories of your mom be happy, loving, and vivid. Fondly, Lori Petrush-Jayne

My deepest condolences to you all. Carole was a unique person with a great laugh, wonderful story-telling, an eye for beauty, color and the unusual. She championed many kids and dealt with difficult situations with humor and compassion. She was creative, quick-witted, highly educated and FUN! She´s gone way too soon. I´m happy to have called her friend.
