Carolyn Carte Obituary

QUEENSBURY Sister Carolyn Carte, 78, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at Eden Park Health Care Facility, in the presence of her family. Born in Peru, N.Y., on July 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Essa Carte. On March 12, 1956, Sister Carolyn took her vows to become a missionary sister with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Community based in Belgium. She led a very dedicated and fulfilling life as a missionary and served in missions around the world, including the West Indies, the Virgin Islands, St. Croix and Dominica. She obtained a bachelor's degree from Marymount Manhattan College. Sister Carolyn spent several years at her convent in New York City ministering at prisons as well as starting the Valentine House residence for unwed mothers in the Bronx. In 1987, her congregation started a new mission along the Mexican border in southern Texas and she ministered there for nine years. She returned to New York state in 1996, and began pastoral ministry at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fort Edward. She facilitated a bereavement group there as well as ministering to the homebound individuals in the parish. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Clyde and Charles, and her sister, Jennette Weidner. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Noela and Leonard Jozwiak of Peru, N.Y.; and two sisters-in-law, Erma Carte of Lake George and Beverly Carte of Peru, N.Y. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. During the last months of her life, Sister Carolyn enjoyed the company and care of her many local friends and family members, including her nieces, Cindy Freebern of Hudson Falls, Kathy Bechard of Queensbury and Lori Carte of Queensbury. There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church on Main Street, in Peru, N.Y. with burial to follow immediately in the church cemetery. A memorial service at her home church, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fort Edward, N.Y., is also being planned for January to celebrate her life. The date will be announced in the parish bulletin. Memorial donations may be made in her name to St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Main Street, Peru, N.Y. 12972.
