He attended Siena College and the University of Detroit. Charlie served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and the U.N. Service Medal. He later owned and operated the Red Deer Traders with his wife and owned and managed several rental properties in Hadley. Charlie loved to walk with Midge, swim, going to buffets, dancing and bowling. He loved country music as well as all Celtic music, especially the bagpipes. He always looked forward to their annual trip to Garden City, S.C. at Royal Gardens Resort. He was a life member of the Hudson-Sacandaga V.F.W. Post 5836, Hadley, Life Member of the William J. Charlie was a wonderful grandfather to his seven grandchildren: Evan Reib Whitefield and his wife, Sarah, David Tory Whitefield, Meghan Michelle DeMarsh, Kyle Douglas Wegner, Kelli Lynn Wegner, Kerri Jean Wegner, and Jesse Michael DeMarsh. He was expecting his first great-grandchild in June. Charlie is also survived by one sister, Joan Kerr and her husband, Bill, of Utah; two nieces, one nephew; several cousins; a lifelong friend who was like a brother to Charlie, Carl Reed and his wife, Bert, of Hadley; as well as many other special friends. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Corinth, with the Rev. Charles Gaffigan, pastor, officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewer Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne, where members of the Hudson-Sacandaga V.F.W. Post 5836 and William J. Midge;
What a sweet man you lost last Sunday! Charlie was one of those rare people who could just light up a room. I didn't know him really well, but he was still one of my favorite people.

My sympathies to you and your family

Alice and I extend our sincere condolences to Midge and the entire family upon their loss.
My rememberances of Charlie were that he always had a smile on his face. I also recall his ability to dance with such ease and grace with Midge. What a glowing couple they made on the dance floor and in life. All who knew Charlie will miss him forever.

When looking back on the times that I have shared with my Papa Charlie, there is not one memory I can think of where we weren't laughing. My grandfather was one of the happiest people that I have ever met. He taught me so much about life, God, and family. We shared in so many memories, and they will never be forgotten. Whether we were on the beach in South Carolina, on the hill overlooking Schroon Lake, sitting around a campfire in Old Forge, dancing to a New Year at First Night, enjoying some REAL food at Golden Corral (=P), or just simply playing cards in the screen house, he was always teaching me something. He taught me not to be afraid of what I want and to stand up for what I believe in. He taught me the true meaning of hard work. He taught me how truely incredible LIFE really is. He taught me about our wonderful God, and how every second should be lived in praise to Him. And he taught me most of all about love. Looking at my Papa's life, I know exactly how I want to live mine. And that is to the fullest. I love you Papa, and I know that you are in Heaven watching over me. Your memory will remain in the lives of people for years to come.
Love your grandaughter,
Meg<3

So many kind words, so many friends, it is overwhelming yet soothing. We are all so appreciative of everything that has been done for us in this very difficult time. My Dad was a person who LOVED to dance and have a great time. Anywhere him and my Mom went, they danced, they played cards, they laughed and they enjoyed themselves. Please come and celebrate his life with us at the "Party of Remembrance" at the Bend of the River after the full military honors burial at Lynwood(Hadley) cemetery. He planned for it years ago when he met with Mike from Brewers Funeral Home and his actual words were "Party of Remembrance" - my dad, anything for a party! It is fully catered so don't worry about bringing anything. There will be live music, lot's of food, a power point presentation of Dad's life and free marguarita's from 5:30 - 6:30. I am sure my Dad will be there in spirit.

Midge and family,
Charlie will always be remembered for that special weekend on Nantucket when Capt. Towel appeared. So many fond memories, he was such an outgoing and delightful person. My bedroom light came on for the first time in a couple of years, so I know Dick was there to meet him and he was letting me know Charlie made it. Heaven will never be the same again.
My prayers are with you all, hang in there - it's tough.

Midge, Shelly, Colleen and Kim

Our prayers of comfort and peace are with you and your families over your sudden and unexpected loss. We are saddened by the news, but are blessed to have such wonderful memories between our two families. I am smiling as I think of the intense volleyball and ping pong games, the picnics and house parties, the debate over which was better cooking over wood or charcoal, the Easter trip to the greyhound race track, the dancing... I could go on and on.
We feel so fortunate to have been able to reconnect with Charlie if only for a short time in Lake George this past September. Who would've guessed it would be our last conversation with him. It only goes to show that we should never take life for granted. Remember it is not how long one lives that counts but how one lives that counts. We know for certain that Charlie definitely knew the difference. We are forever blessed for having known him as our friend.

Our condolences, love and prayers. May the peace of God that passes all understanding be with you.

Colleen and the Reib family. Thinking of you during this time of your loss.

Having met your dad at the Republican picnic at the Fairgrounds a couple of years ago and catching up on things I could tell you were very close to him. Remember, as you all will, the good times you all shared together.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you - I am traveling to Washington DC this weekend so will miss getting over in person - but know that I will be thinking of you. Will light a candle at the Basilica on Catholic U. campus while there for your dad.

Know that he is in a better place with Jesus and the angels above watching over all of you.

Charlie, a.k.a. Papa Charlie, was and will always be an inspiration, and one of the best role models i have ever met. And will forever be remembered by everyone, especially when someone drinks a scotch on the rocks.
