Gary Duell Obituary

Gary H. Duell

October 3, 1936 - September 1, 2024

LAKELAND, FL - Gary H. Duell, 87, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of North Creek, N.Y., passed away September 1, 2024 in Lakeland.

Born October 3, 1936 in Glens Falls, N.Y., Gary was the son of Harold B. and Alice M. Duell.

Gary graduated from South High in 1954, where he was active on the baseball, football, basketball, and track teams. He graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1958 where he played soccer and baseball. He belonged to the Delta Kappa Fraternity.

In 1958 Gary married his long-time girlfriend, Janice Mason Duell, and they began their teaching careers together at Johnsburg Central School in North Creek, N.Y. There Gary taught technology and driver education for 34 years, where he passed on his talent for perfection and pride in one's work. He earned the nickname "proper tool Duell".

In 1992 Gary and Jan retired from teaching and began traveling in U.S., Canada, and Alaska in their motor home. They became "snow birds" and spent winters in Lakeland, Fla. at the Sanlan RV Park, eventually moving permanently to Lakeland.

In addition to traveling, Gary enjoyed carpentry, building his own home, and maintaining their property. He was an avid and competitive golfer and gained respect at several area courses. He loved his family and was affectionately known as "Grandpa Bus." For years he was a timer for the annual White Water Derby. He served as a Webelo Scout leader. In addition he taught adult education courses at JCS for many years.

Gary was predeceased by his parents; an infant daughter, Laurie Ann; his sister, Flora Casey; and the family pet labradors: Abner and Cricket.

Left to cherish Gary's memory are his wife, Jan, of 66 years; his son, Gregory (Linda) G. Duell of Apex, N.C.; his daughter, Susan J. Alfaro and her husband, Carlos, of Fairfax Station, Va.; four grandchildren; Carlie (Johnny Ross) and Owen Alfaro, and Nathan (Mackenzie) and Hannah Duell; great-grandson, Jameson Gregory Duell; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His beloved little Oreo also survives.

A memorial service will be held at the discretion of family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gary's memory may be made to SPCA, Lakeland Fla.

Mrs. Duell and family I´m so sorry for your loss. One of my majors at Johnsburg Central was Industrial Arts, so I had Mr. Duell as a teacher throughout my high school years. His teachings have helped me with my career at Barton and in my life in general. I always looked forward to shop class and getting serenaded from Neil Diamond playing on a cassette player during class. The last time I saw him was at the health center wearing my Barton shirt and he proudly proclaimed how Greg had designed their logo. May God be with you and your family, blessing you with many happy memories of Mr. Duell.

Mr Duell was the best! We learned valuable lessons in Industrial Arts (Shop Class) and of course Driver´s Ed, that are still relevant 50 years later. They need to bring those skills back into schools today. RIP to a great teacher and humble man.

To Mrs. Duell and family: I am sorry to learn of the loss of one of my teachers at JHS. Mr Duell was a tremendous example for me growing up and his honesty, care and concern made him a model for me and my peers as we navigated the halls of JCS. He certainly inspired my interest in tools and woodworking and led us by example to be responsible adults and develop useful skills for learning and life. I can attest to his contributions he made to my integrity and respect for others by his obvious principes always present in the workshop or in the field. May God bless him and his family for the contributions he made to the students and faculty at JHS.

Mrs. Duell and family, I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Duells passing. I remember him from my junior high shop days and how patient he always was as we worked on our projects. One of the nicest people I have ever known. I was glad to see you both at mom´s 50th class reunion. Just as kind as I remembered. Rest easy Mr. Duell.

I took most if not all of Mr. Duell's classes in High School. Although I've not seen him since graduation in 1982, his teaching has been a constant influence in my career as an Architectural Draftsperson. I'm sorry to hear of his passing, but his memory will carry on in the many lives such as mine that he has touched. He was truly a good man.

Gary was one of the best . Wood shop introduced me to tools of the trade and Drafting technology introduced me to design .You didn't give this guy BS or he might hang you on a wall . Ha.. I remember riding my bike to the top of his mountain where he introduced me to low voltage relay operated electronics .
One of the good guys.
