Joan Robertson Obituary

Joan (Ahr) Robertson

Jan. 27, 1930 - Nov. 15, 2022

CLEVERDALE - Joan (Ahr) Robertson, 92, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at her home in Cleverdale.

Born January 27, 1930 in Buffalo, NY and was the daughter of the late Arthur F. and Frances M. (Zacher) Ahr.

Joan graduated from Albany State University in 1951 earning her a position as an English teacher. While studying there she became a life member of American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was active in the Adirondack Branch for decades, where she was a long time member of the branches Morning Literature Study Group.

Joan was an enthusiastic lover of nature, she was a member of the Audubon Society and was an early Adirondack 46er. She was proud of the accomplishment of climbing the 46 high peaks, which she finished July 13, 1986, the 2233rd to do this. Now the list has more than 13,000 hikers' names.

Joan shared her love of nature with Girl Scouts in the area, and showed the troops how to construct pine needle baskets and dolls made from pine cones.

Joan served three terms as the Commissioner for the Lake George Park Commission, volunteering many hours evaluating lakeshore projects. She was active in many other organizations, as well as, Adirondack Park Agency, Every Women's Council, Boy Scouts, Aging in Place and Warren/Washington County Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. She also was the Campaign Director for her husband during election campaigns for Queensbury and Warren County Public Offices.

As a young girl in the 1930's, with the help of her father, Joan built a Soap Box Derby car and won the local Soap Box Derby competition. The following year she was unable to defend her title because the rules were changed and she was unable to participate. As a result, Joan became a lifelong champion for women's rights.

For many years, she was an active member of the Harrisena Church in Queensbury.

Joan is predeceased by her husband, Hammond Robertson, Jr. who passed away December 6, 2006.

She is survived by her children: Hammond "Skip" Robertson and his wife, Sandy of Southwick, MA, BethAmy Robertson of Glens Falls, NY and Douglas Robertson and his wife, Joan of Horseheads, NY; her grandchildren: Andrew Robertson, Liz Rodas and her husband Carlos of Lisbon, ME, Dr. Stephanie Marie Robertson of Gothenburg, Sweden and Alexandra Lynne Robertson of Horseheads, NY. She is also survived by her nine great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place on a later date at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Dear Skip, Doug, Beth and family, We are hoping you find comfort in all of the wonderful shared memories of your mother.
Aunt Joan was a remarkable woman, and a true bright light in our family. We loved visiting with her over the years, and she was always so welcoming. She always found time to offer an iced tea and a chat on the front porch, overlooking beautiful Lake George. We loved hearing her talk about her artwork, her latest hiking adventure or rare bird that she happened to spot. She had such enthusiasm for the "next great adventure" and hers was certainly a life well lived. Our deepest condolences.
Love, Karen and Bruce

My fondest memories of my sweet Aunt Joan was her bubbly personality. When I was young she had a tree in her front yard, that she would put candy kisses under, to have us think the tree dropped candy kisses. Also, I always remember the last lunch myself, my son and daughter had with Aunt Joan and Uncle Hammond many years ago, on their front porch looking out a Lake George. I will always save a special place in my heart for both of them.

I was very fortunate to know our wonderful neighbor Joan, first visiting her beautiful home for Audubon meetings, then later just visiting her. Her own paintings showed just one aspect of her many talents. Joan and I car-pooled to watercolor classes at the Shirt Factory in Glens Falls.
With her years of experience on the Lake George Park Commission and other work for Lake George protection (if I recall, she was responsible for Girl Scouts planting trees along West Brook), she advised and discussed many issues of Lake George protection with me.
In the past couple years, I saw Joan mostly when she was walking Peanut or at the Post Office. She will be missed in Cleverdale.

Joan was a bright light in this world. My fondest memories with Joan are when she would show me her beautiful paintings and her pine needle baskets. Her love of nature and art was so palpable that you couldn“t help but share in her joy.
With love and sympathy, Lauren (Nicholson)

I will miss Joan. She was a staple part of Cleverdale, and knew a lot of things about a lot of things. Some called her the mayor of Cleverdale.
We were honored to know her and Ham..

My sincere condolences to Joan's family and her many, many friends. We were active in the Audubon Society years ago and she was a joy to spend time with. She taught me a great deal about the bird species that can be seen in and around Warren county. Rest in peace, Joan.
