Joseph Feingold Obituary

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Dr. Joseph Feingold, 92, raised in Brooklyn, and a longtime resident of Fort Edward, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in Phoenix, Ariz. In his later years Dr. Feingold lived in Grosse Ile, Mich. amongst family.

Dr. Feingold was a first generation American, born in Fleischman, N.Y. on Dec. 12, 1912. Though not religious, he was fiercely proud of his Jewish heritage, often telling stories of the immigrant experience of his parents, Charles Feingold and the former Bessie Feinstein.

He attended the University of Michigan, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1933. In 1937, he received his medical degree from the University of Michigan's Medical School.

During World War II, Dr. Feingold served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the European Theater and attained the rank of Major. In August 2004, he was very proud and pleased to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

In 1940, Dr. Feingold and his wife, the former Ruth Bartlett, settled in Fort Edward. He was the quintessential small town physician, carrying a black bag and making house calls. For his 90th birthday celebration, he was thrilled to receive hundreds of well wishes from former colleagues, patients and their families.

Dr. Feingold was a voracious reader, a lover of history, and a strong patient advocate.

He was predeceased by his wife Ruth.

Dr. Feingold is survived by four daughters: Estelle (George) Bletsas of Grosse Ile, Mich.; Margaret (Charles) Owens of Grosse Ile, Mich.; Lois (Laurence) Feingold-Taff of Cabin John, Md.; and Barbara (David) Chardavoyne of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Donations in Dr. Feingold's memory may be made to the Fort Edward Historical Association, 22 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828 and the Glens Falls Hospital, 100 Park St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
