Norwood Olmsted Obituary

South Glens Falls -- Norwood W. "Woody" Olmsted, 87, of Merritt Road, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at his home.

Born in the Town of Charleston, Maine, on Jan. 19, 1918, he was the son of Wendell A. and Ethel Mae (Higgins) Olmsted.

"Woody" was a graduate of Higgins classical Institute in Charleston, Maine, and the University of Maine in 1946, with a B.S. in Forest Management. He was active in the Society of American Foresters, Society of American Photogrammetrists, American Forestry Association, American Pulpwood Association, Empire State Forest Products Association, Adirondack North Country Association, New York Forest Owners Association and Canadian Pulpwood Association and the former Adirondack Park Association.

He attended the First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls and served on the South Glens Falls School Board for several years.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and woodsman, and a founder of Goodnow Flow.

"Woody" married Elizabeth (Crocker) Olmsted on Oct. 25, 1947.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers.

Survivors besides his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth, (Betty) Olmsted, of South Glens Falls, include his son, Wesley A. Olmsted and his wife, Debbie, of Newcomb; his daughter, Retired Lieutenant Colonel F. Elaine (Olmsted) Williams and her husband, David, of Puyallup, Wash.; his sister, Rebecca Olmsted Amero of Charleston, Maine; his brother, Raymond Olmsted of Pennsylvania; two grandsons, Charles Olmsted and his wife, Lennie, and Grant Williams; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Roselena Olmsted; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Mr. Olmsted's request, there will be no calling hours.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

The family suggests that donations be made in his memory to Moreau Emergency Squad, 1583 Route 9, Fort Edward, NY 12828-9433 or to the Newcomb Emergency Squad, Newcomb, NY 12852, or to Hospice of Saratoga County, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all your family. I remember Woody from Goodnow Flow. My Dad (Ed LaClair) was also active with the Goodnow Flow Association and I remember them going to Board Meetings and working on different Projects. They had a lot of good times there.
